Tamkang University’s diverse environment, with its combination of international students and faculty, offered a genuinely rich and global learning experience.
My journey to Taiwan began with a scholarship opportunity that I was able to get through Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). When it came to selecting a school, Tamkang University stood out as the best option for my field of study. The university's diverse environment, with its mix of international students and professors, promised a rich, global learning experience.
My favorite place on campus is the coffee shop near the Business Building and the traditional Chinese garden. They both give me a sense of peace and escape on stressful days.
Prior to arriving in Taiwan, I had no background in Mandarin. Learning Mandarin has therefore been my greatest challenge, given how different it is from my native language. However, I've been blessed with supportive Taiwanese friends who have helped me navigate learning Mandarin. After dedicating a year to studying the language, I'm now able to engage in short conversations with friends. It's been a challenging but rewarding journey.
Outside of my studies, I've cultivated a balanced lifestyle. I enjoy hitting the gym, cooking, and exploring Taiwan through travel and hiking.
I've had the privilege of experiencing numerous Taiwanese festivals. However, my most memorable cultural experience was attending the indigenous youth forum. This event brought me to the Kanakanavu Tribe in Namasia and provided invaluable insights into Taiwan's indigenous peoples.
I've also taken on a leadership role as the president of the Belize Taiwan Association. Our main objective is to engage Belizeans in Taiwan through various community events, fostering a sense of connection and cultural exchange.
I love the safety and the convenience of transportation of Taiwan as they have fostered a greater sense of independence and freedom in my daily life. To friends and family back home, I wholeheartedly recommend exploring Taiwan's natural wonders such as Sun Moon Lake, Alishan, and Green Island. And of course, no visit would be complete without indulging in the country's delicious cuisine.
Looking ahead, if given the chance to stay in Taiwan after graduation, I aspire to work closely with my embassy. This would not only provide valuable career experience but also strengthen the ties between Belize and Taiwan.
