Guatemala
At NCCU, I've found it to be the most welcoming university for foreigners in Taiwan. It's affordable, convenient, and it's easy to make both local and international friends.
I had worked for 3 years in the government and in international organizations before coming to Taiwan. My last job was with the Government of Guatemala, specifically for the Ministry of Economy. I served as an advisor in project monitoring. Observing my fellow economists analyze data and create graphs really caught my attention. Additionally, in Guatemala and throughout Central America, many international cooperation and development projects combine areas of social sciences and economics. Studying in an economics program gives me a better opportunity to find a job compared to if I had pursued Asian studies.
I have always wanted to study abroad after completing my studies in Guatemala. I was considering which country to pursue my master's degree in, with options like Korea, Spain, Chile, and Taiwan. When COVID-19 hit, many countries closed their application processes, but Taiwan kept theirs open. This gave me even more enthusiasm to apply to Taiwan, especially since it was one of the few countries that handled the pandemic exceptionally well.
I applied for the MOFA scholarships, which included one year of Mandarin Chinese followed by two years for the master's degree. Initially, I was apprehensive about cultural differences. However, upon my arrival, I realized that Taiwanese society is welcoming to immigrants. The people are kind and helpful, always willing to listen and support. This made it easier for me to find accommodation, choose my desired career path, and confidently introduce myself.
Now that I look back, choosing Taiwan has been a blessing. I don't regret any decision I made. Every day offers something new to learn and fresh experiences to live. I never imagined how wonderful Taiwan would be, and my cherished memories will always remain with me.
NCCU stands out as one of the top universities in Asia, offering a comprehensive view of the continent. While I initially planned to study in Tainan, the Guatemalan embassy relocated me to Taipei. Friends of mine mentioned NCCU's esteemed alumni, many of whom are influential leaders in Taiwan. The university's significant impact on Taiwan and the contributions of its graduates deeply resonated with me. During my application process, I was grateful for the support from the Office of International Cooperation (OIC). The application was straightforward and entirely in English. I want to emphasize how technologically advanced and foreigner-friendly NCCU is, and I truly value my time here.
NCCU is located on a mountain, offering stunning viewpoints of the city contrasted with the natural beauty of the campus. I particularly love the art and cultural center on the mountain, which overlooks the river and the city. I spend every day with my friends, making me feel at home. I enjoy greeting my teachers, running by the river, and biking in the fresh air of NCCU. Outside of academics, I play table tennis and have a keen interest in joining the coffee club, given my love for coffee. I've also registered for a 5km race during the School Festival.
During my studies, I found the microeconomics course challenging due to its intensive mathematical component. However, with the support of my teacher and classmates, I eventually found it enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed applied macroeconomics, which enhanced my analytical skills and understanding of fiscal and monetary policies. This course involved memorable group projects, including a video simulating a country's economy. Additionally, I've taken a variety of courses from IMAS and IDAS, such as the Theory of Ethnography, Decision Making, and courses on statistical analysis, research methods, and LGBT studies offered by the department of social work.
Since moving to Taiwan, my Mandarin has improved significantly. Within two years, I can now communicate with friends in Mandarin, and they respond either in Mandarin or English. The elders often help me practice, and despite my initial shyness, my friends are always supportive when I struggle. Restaurants often have menus in both English and Mandarin, and people are extremely friendly and helpful when I show them pictures of dishes I want to order. Overall, my confidence in speaking Mandarin has grown due to the supportive environment in Taiwan.
Study in Taiwan is unforgettable. Taiwan is a forward-looking country with advanced technology and a commendable lifestyle. It's safe, boasts an efficient transportation and health system, offers delectable cuisine, and living costs are relatively low. At NCCU, I've found it to be the most welcoming university for foreigners in Taiwan. It's affordable, convenient, and it's easy to make both local and international friends. The Taiwanese are hospitable; they include you in numerous activities, and even invite you to their homes during festivities like Chinese New Year, ensuring you experience their rich culture. For those considering further studies, Taiwan, particularly NCCU, provides diverse opportunities and a warm welcome.
I aspire to work in Taiwan and recently had a successful job interview with the Central American Bank for young professionals. They're awaiting my academic certificate from NCCU before finalizing the offer. Studying at NCCU has opened doors to great opportunities and allowed me to build a valuable network with future leaders. This experience has contributed to my personal growth and adaptation to diverse environments.
