Taiwan can be encapsulated in the phrase ‘Taiwan 94 Taiwan’ – a testament to its unique character and charm.
My first experience with Taiwan was in 2014 as an exchange student at Hualien Vocational High School, thanks to Rotary International. It was my parents who encouraged me to seize this opportunity, and without their persuasion, I might not have discovered Taiwan.
To me, Taiwan can be encapsulated in the phrase “Taiwan 94 Taiwan” – a testament to its unique character and charm.
Note: In Taiwan, people sometimes substitute “is” with the numbers 9 and 4 (read separately) in writing, making the statement “Taiwan 94 Taiwan” equivalent to “Taiwan is Taiwan.”
My choice of school was influenced by its international ranking and the allure of its bilingual teaching approach. My major, chemical engineering, has deep roots in my family, from my cousins to my grandfather. My fascination with the chemistry of the world and the versatility of this field, which spans numerous industries, led me to this choice. I appreciate how my program at NTU emphasizes self-learning and resilience, equipped with ample university resources.
The greatest learning achievements I’ve experienced in Taiwan are self-determination, resilience, and decision-making. NTU has presented me with significant challenges, but equally significant rewards.
On the other hand, adapting to Taiwan’s study culture was a challenge. Initially, the intense focus on grades was overwhelming, but I learned to adapt by engaging in various activities and clubs, which helped maintain my mental and physical well-being.
Outside my studies, I’m actively involved in various pursuits: hosting a science podcast, riding my motorcycle, surfing, bartending, and organizing social events like Martes de Cotorreo. These activities keep my life vibrant and balanced.
I’ve also traveled to different places in Taiwan. My favorite places are the tranquil Ruisui and Ji’an in Hualien, and in Taipei, the serene Wulai. I constantly encourage my family and friends to visit Taiwan, sharing with them the safety, convenience, and natural beauty I’ve experienced here in Taipei.
Studying in Taiwan has improved my language skills, not just in Mandarin but also in other languages, due to Taiwan’s international environment. My work at OWC and participation in NTU’s Mentorship Program have furthered my career opportunities, highlighting Taiwan’s potential as a launchpad in various fields.
I believe anyone can benefit from studying in Taiwan. It’s a place for change-makers who seek to understand different cultures and approaches to problem-solving.
Having spent nearly six years in Taiwan, I’m always seeking new challenges and growth. Whether that journey continues in Taiwan or leads me elsewhere, my goal is to keep exploring the world and absorbing diverse stories.
The gap in technology availability, scholarship opportunities, and internationalization between Mexico and Taiwan is stark. The emotional support, the experience of living abroad, and cultural differences all contribute to a unique and enriching educational experience at NTU.
