Taiwan, for me, represents an ‘island of freedom,’ offering a sense of security and openness that was essential for my studies.

Seeking a Safe and Liberating Learning Environment

I chose Taiwan for its safe political climate and the opportunity to use Mandarin as my daily communication tool. Taiwan, for me, represents an “island of freedom,” offering a sense of security and openness that was essential for my studies.

Embracing Diversity and Academic Freedom

The decision to attend my current school was driven by its international bachelor’s program. This program’s diversity, allowing students to study alongside international peers, and the freedom to choose from a variety of majors, greatly appealed to me. Despite not being completely satisfied with my grades, I’ve enjoyed the academic challenge and the process of adjusting to a more rigorous study environment.

Celebrating Social Achievements and Overcoming Language Barriers

One of my proudest achievements has been making over 100 friends during my first year. This social aspect has been as enriching as the academic experience. The language barrier was a significant challenge, particularly using English for academic purposes. Instead of forcing myself, I allowed time to adapt naturally. Additionally, understanding the school’s online system, quite different from the Japanese high school system I was accustomed to, was a hurdle that I eventually overcame.

Life Beyond Academia: Volleyball and Adventure

Outside the classroom, I spend almost every day playing volleyball with friends. This sport has been a great way to relax and bond with others. Also, my favorite place in Taiwan is Liuqiu Island (小琉球), a serene and beautiful island that captures the essence of Taiwan’s natural beauty.

When sharing my experiences in Taiwan with family and friends back home, I describe it as a fun and adventurous journey. Living in Taiwan feels like a continuous adventure, constantly revealing new facets of my personality and capabilities.

The Impact on Future Career and Personal Growth

While I’m still uncertain about how studying in Taiwan will specifically benefit my future career, I am confident that the language skills and cultural experiences will be invaluable. Taiwan is ideal for those planning to work in environments requiring both Mandarin and English proficiency.

As for my future plans, I remain open to possibilities. I haven’t decided whether to stay in Taiwan, but the experience here has been incredibly positive.

A Comparison with Studying Back Home

Studying in Taiwan, compared to my home country, has been more enjoyable and enriching. The challenges faced as a foreigner in Taiwan have helped me grow in confidence and self-awareness. Every challenge overcome has been an opportunity to learn more about myself, strengths and weaknesses alike, promising to illuminate my path in the future.

In summary, my experience in Taiwan has been about more than just academics; it has been a journey of language acquisition, cultural immersion, and personal growth, filled with fun, adventure, and meaningful challenges.
