United States of America
The teachers and chefs at NKUHT are deeply invested in our academic success and well-being… The diverse curriculum has allowed me to delve deeply into various international cuisines.
I was drawn to study abroad to escape my comfort zone, immerse myself in new cultures, and expand my knowledge of international cuisines. Taiwan, in particular, attracted me due to its growing international outreach and potential to captivate global interest in its people, culture, and cuisine. My choice of institution, NKUHT, was influenced by my encounters with four extraordinarily talented chefs in America, all affiliated with NKUHT. Their influence inspired me to pursue my culinary arts studies there.
Upon arriving in Taiwan, I was pleasantly surprised by the incredible friendliness of its people, the urban yet safe cities, and the diversity of experiences available. My time studying and living in Taiwan has been incredibly rewarding. I have made lifelong friends and received warm welcomes into their homes, especially during times when I couldn’t return to the States due to COVID-19. The diverse backgrounds of my teachers have enriched my learning experiences with unique insights.
The teachers and chefs at NKUHT are deeply invested in our academic success and well-being. They are attentive, nurturing individual student needs, and dedicated to refining our skills. The diverse curriculum has allowed me to delve deeply into various international cuisines. The university’s international events are a highlight, enabling us to apply our learned skills in practical settings. These events, along with joining NKUHT’s billiards team and competing in tournaments, have created invaluable experiences and cherished memories.
Adjusting to the cultural differences in Taiwan posed a challenge for me. Coming from the United States, I was accustomed to a more direct and competitive work style. However, with the help of Taiwanese friends and classmates, I learned to work effectively with people from varied backgrounds and work styles.
One of the key benefits of being an international student in Taiwan is the willingness of Taiwanese students to meet you halfway, both socially and academically. Their open and welcoming nature, coupled with a safe and nurturing environment, significantly fosters academic growth and creates lasting memories.
Post-graduation, I aspire to promote Chinese and Taiwanese cuisine in the United States. There is a growing interest in Asian cuisine, but a comprehensive understanding of the richness and diversity of Chinese and Taiwanese cuisine is still limited. Taiwan offers a continued opportunity to deepen my understanding of its culture and cuisine, which I plan to share and inspire others with in the United States.
For those considering studying in Taiwan, I advise embracing the opportunity wholeheartedly. Step out of your comfort zone, expand your horizons, and immerse yourself in the unique experiences that Taiwan offers. Taking a chance on yourself and on Taiwan can lead to a transformative and unforgettable experience.
