I chose NTU’s Department of Chinese Literature for its unique program focusing on Mandarin Language and Literature for international students.

Pursuing Studies Abroad in Taiwan

I chose to study abroad to immerse myself in a new language and culture. The decision to pursue a degree in Mandarin made Taiwan the ideal destination, allowing me to learn and use Mandarin daily.

My first visit to Taiwan was through a high school exchange program in 2016. Before this, my knowledge of Taiwan was limited. Through the exchange program, I lived in southern Taiwan with three different host families and attended a local high school. My host families welcomed me with open arms and took me in as one of their own. They showed me the beauty of Taiwan and its rich culture and unique history. The experience I had only left me craving for more. Even before completing the exchange program, I was already planning my return to Taiwan.

My favorite place in Taiwan is Taitung. Taitung has both mountains and the ocean, and the views around this part of Taiwan are breathtaking.

First Impressions of Taiwan

One of my first impressions of Taiwan was the warmth of the people. My host families, teachers, classmates, and even strangers exuded kindness and eagerness to share Taiwan’s culture. This welcoming attitude contrasted starkly with the discrimination often faced by foreigners in other countries. Another one of my first impressions of Taiwan was the convenience. In Taipei, there are convenience stores on every corner open 24 hours a day, the MRT, buses, Ubikes, night markets open late, and public Wifi in many areas of the city. I have never felt stranded or unable to get what I need in Taipei.

Academic and Living Experience at NTU

I chose NTU’s Department of Chinese Literature for its unique program focusing on Chinese Language and Literature for international students. It was the only four-year bachelor’s degree program with this focus I could find. NTU’s global reputation also played a significant role in my decision.

Studying at NTU has been an incredible journey. The campus is expansive, with abundant resources, and the surrounding area is filled with restaurants, coffee shops, and accessible public transport. Taipei’s blend of urban and natural environments, with parks and hiking trails, offers a balanced lifestyle. Academically, NTU’s diverse course offerings, including political science, agriculture, art, and entomology, have enriched my experience. Participating in activities like a docent program at the National Taiwan Museum has made my time here memorable.

Academic Challenges and Growth

My academic journey at NTU has been challenging yet fulfilling. Initially, I struggled with my limited Mandarin proficiency but received ample support from professors. Their patience and extra assistance were crucial in my academic improvement. The initial challenge of keeping up with classes was overcome through seeking extra help and consistent effort, leading to significant improvement in my studies.

NTU’s vibrant student life, characterized by numerous clubs and activities, offers something for every interest. The university hosts various events for international students and has a wide array of clubs, ensuring an inclusive and engaging experience.

Benefits of Being an International Student in Taiwan

As an international student, Taiwan offers a rich learning experience both academically and culturally. The convenience of transportation facilitates exploring the island, enhancing the overall educational experience. I advise students considering studying in Taiwan to keep an open mind and seize the opportunity. Taiwan has a plethora of experiences to offer.

Future Plans and Taiwan’s Appeal

Post-graduation, I plan to pursue a master’s degree and gain work experience in Taiwan. The beauty of the country, the appealing city life in Taipei, and the overall safety are compelling reasons to stay. After three years in Taiwan, the thought of not living here seems unimaginable.
