The richness of traditional Chinese culture, which I had previously explored as part of a Chinese culture club, further fueled my interest in Taiwan.
My earlier experiences studying abroad were enriching, allowing me to broaden my horizons and learn from other cultures. Taiwan, offering a distinct experience from my previous stays, seemed particularly intriguing. The richness of traditional Chinese culture, which I had previously explored as part of a Chinese culture club, further fueled my interest in Taiwan. Although it’s hard to recall my initial impression after two years of being here, I’m continually fascinated by Taiwan’s vibrant environment, polite and helpful society, and its rich culture.
The fitting research topic and the scholarship opportunity provided by DAAD (the German Academic Exchange Service) were the key reasons for choosing to study in Taiwan. At NTUST, the emphasis on machine learning and a hands-on approach over theoretical knowledge has been a significant shift from my previous academic experiences. Here, I’ve gained valuable insights, especially in deep learning and coding skills, which are instrumental in my image processing research. The PhD program at Taiwan Tech is well-structured, offering the independence of research in both topic and execution.
Finding the right lab and supervisor is crucial in the PhD journey. It’s important to engage with potential supervisors, either online or through peer recommendations, to ensure a good fit. The lab environment demands attention and finding a suitable one is essential. The facilities at Taiwan Tech are conducive to experimenting in fields like artificial intelligence, a major focus in many labs.
Traveling around Taiwan has been a part of my experience, with Yilan, Hualien, and other places offering breathtaking scenery. The east coast, particularly Taroko Gorge and Wulai, is remarkable for its beautiful landscapes, enormous mountains, and unique experiences like surfing amidst jungle hills.
Studying in Taiwan provides the opportunity to work in an international environment and develop a unique skillset by combining one’s heritage with the knowledge gained here. Post-graduation, I find Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and the rapidly developing tech sector in Southeast Asia quite appealing. The opportunities available to foreigners in the Taiwanese job market are noteworthy.
For those considering studying in Taiwan, it’s vital to understand the magnitude of this decision. While Taiwan offers numerous opportunities for growth, adapting to the significant changes from your previous life can be challenging.
