Poland
I was looking for a country that was safe, developed, and affordable. Taiwan stood out as having it all!
I’ve always wanted to study abroad. Since I did my bachelor’s degree in Warsaw, Poland, I knew my only other chance of studying abroad would be doing a master’s. Living in a different country offers unique learning opportunities, especially in a completely different culture with different customs and language. It’s an incredible opportunity to challenge myself and grow as a person.
My childhood of traveling across Europe, the United States, and Canada instilled in me a desire to explore something new, leading me to Asia. I was looking for a country that was safe, developed, and affordable. Among my options, including Japan, Singapore, and Korea, Taiwan stood out as having it all!
Visiting Taiwan for two weeks in 2016, I immediately fell in love with the place. The journey from Taoyuan to Taipei on the THSR, the “Taiwanese summer” with its high temperatures and rain, and the warmth of the Taiwanese people left a lasting impression. Their helpfulness, cheerfulness, and constant smiles made me feel at home.
My research for English-taught business programs led me to Soochow University’s Global Business Program. Having heard positive feedback from friends who studied there and with its exchange program with my alma mater in Warsaw, I knew it was the right choice for me. The well-rounded courses at Soochow University helped me understand the business environment and cultural differences between the West and the Asian Pacific region. The curriculum covered diverse areas like finance, HR, marketing, and quantitative methods.
Studying in Taiwan was an eye-opening experience, working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Participating in events for both international and Taiwanese students was a highlight of my university life. The convenience of English in academic and daily life was a boon, and learning Mandarin enhanced my social experiences significantly. Overcoming the language barrier was challenging; although many Taiwanese people speak English, they are often shy about it. Learning Mandarin was initially daunting, but persistence paid off, and it significantly improved my experience in Taiwan. Starting with basic greetings, I’ve progressed to more fluent communication, which has opened many doors.
I’ve explored almost every popular location in Taiwan, from Yilan and Hualien on the east coast to Green Island, Kenting, and Sun Moon Lake. The breathtaking nature of Hualien and Taroko National Park, with its clean air and serene environment, is a must-see. Sun Moon Lake, especially with its stunning sunsets, is worth spending a few days exploring.
My immediate plan is to find a job in Taiwan, where I see a lot of learning and growth opportunities, especially in understanding Taiwanese business practices. Taiwan is also an excellent place for starting a business. For anyone considering studying in Taiwan, I recommend embracing the culture and language. The ability to communicate in Mandarin is incredibly rewarding.
Living in Taiwan has been enlightening, helping me appreciate Taiwanese and Asian cultures. This experience has transformed me, enhancing my understanding of trends and thought processes in this part of the world.
