Journey to Studying Abroad

I chose to study abroad to get closer to my ideal self. My interest in foreign countries, languages, and cultures started when I was an elementary student after participating in the World Expo in Japan. This experience sparked my desire to become a global person, capable of communicating with people worldwide. Studying abroad seemed like the first step toward becoming a global talent.

Taiwan’s study environment was particularly suitable for my academic interests. In high school, my focus was on English, Mandarin, and international relations. Taiwan offered the unique opportunity to study these three fields simultaneously. Here, I could study international relations in English while using Mandarin in my daily life, a combination not readily available in Japan.

First Impressions and Choosing Tamkang University

Upon my first arrival in Taiwan, I felt an immediate sense of being at home, despite never having lived there. The friendliness and caring nature of Taiwanese people were striking.

I chose Tamkang University (TKU) for its specialization in diplomacy and international relations, wanting to become globally aware and communicative. This department’s broad range of studies was attractive, allowing me to discover my preferred field during my studies. Additionally, TKU’s unique location near a port town in Tamshui, surrounded by nature yet close to the city center, appealed to me. The beautiful sunsets and riverside walks have been especially comforting when I feel homesick.

Initially, I struggled with English materials, but the university’s facilities and the kindness of classmates helped me overcome this. The environment at TKU and the supportive people I met made adapting to life in Taiwan relatively easy.

I really enjoy TKU’s international environment. Most of my classmates were from different countries, and my courses were taught in English. This diversity has broadened my perspectives, learning not only academically but also from my peers. Additionally, TKU offers free Mandarin classes and numerous international exchange opportunities, including programs in Korea, China, and online courses with Indonesian universities, which I found beneficial for language cultivation and cultural exchange.

At TKU, I work part-time for the Taiwan Education Center in Japan, promoting Taiwanese universities to Japanese students through online events and education fairs. This role lets me share my experiences and hopefully deepen the bond between Taiwan and Japan. My favorite place in Taiwan is Tainan, known for its historic sites, traditional food, and beautiful scenery.

Student Life and Support

Studying abroad can be challenging, but TKU’s International Office provided exceptional support, helping integrate into Taiwanese culture. They organize cultural activities and festivals, ensuring foreign students feel secure and cared for. This support eased my transition into Taiwanese life and university.

Future Plans and Perspectives on Taiwan

Studying in Taiwan has cultivated my independence and broadened my horizons. Living alone in a foreign country highlighted my weaknesses and strengths, forcing me to grow and adapt. Interacting with people of different backgrounds has also enhanced my flexibility in thinking.

After graduation, I plan to return to Japan to start my career. The decision to stay and work in Taiwan depends on individual goals and the opportunities available. Taiwanese companies seeking immediate contributions from newcomers could benefit from providing more training opportunities, which could encourage more Japanese students to stay.

Advice for Prospective Students

I would still choose to study in Taiwan if given another chance. The university and living environment here have significantly contributed to my growth. To those hesitant about studying in Taiwan, I recommend challenging yourself to see the beauty beyond your comfort zone. Despite the hardships, the experiences gained will nourish your future and transform challenges into strengths. I hope your study abroad journey will be exciting and rewarding!
