NTNU is well known for its outstanding MTC and provides a wide range of customized programs, including one-on-one tutorials. During my time here, I didn’t experience any major challenges with learning the language.
Choosing Taiwan is about a holistic package. It was about seeking a place that offered a strong academic foundation in my field of interest, a fantastic opportunity for language immersion, a rich cultural experience, a beautiful environment, and a relatively affordable cost of living.
Choosing NTNU was a decision based on its unique strengths, especially its unparalleled Mandarin training and solid academic foundation in humanities and social sciences. It was not just about studying in Taiwan; it was about studying at the best place in Taiwan for my specific academic and linguistic goals. The combination of its prestigious Mandarin Training Center (MTC), reputable departments, convenient location, and overall supportive environment made NTNU the clear choice for me. NTNU is known for its world-class MTC and offers many tailored programs, including one-on-one tutorials. I did not face any specific problems regarding language learning here.
My decision to enroll in the physics program at NTNU was driven by a focus on specific faculty expertise, research opportunities aligned with my interests, a well-structured curriculum, and the potential for a strong academic community within a supportive university environment. NTNU also organizes so many seminars and guest lectures delivered by people working on high importance topics and fields which gives us students great insights on how the knowledge, which we get from the classes, can be put to effective use.
The learning environment in the department is generally collaborative and supportive and at the same time challenging but rewarding so that the students improve as they find solutions to different problems. There is a good mix of lectures and problem-solving sessions, and the professors are usually approachable during office hours should there be any extra help or doubts that the students may want to get cleared. In addition, the library at NTNU is huge and has ample material available for self-studying and for increasing knowledge about many different topics.
The sports center is my favorite spot on campus, as there are so many people to play with and have a great time refreshing the body.
The sports center is located on the Gongguan campus. It is a fantastic facility with a well-equipped gym, multiple basketball and badminton courts. The vibe is usually pretty energetic, with students from all departments working out or playing sports. Students from all around the globe like to play out there, so quite often I can hear different languages in my surroundings. It is a great place to interact with the locals too, as they are quite approachable and friendly.
While I came to Taiwan for specific academic and linguistic reasons, the most significant and lasting impact has been this profound personal growth in adaptability and openness. I am also relatively new here and have not found the chance yet to volunteer for any event. With that being said I would be looking forward to making a difference during my time here.
Embrace Mandarin immersion fully. Don't be intimidated; it's the best way to learn Mandarin at MTC, NTNU. Take language classes seriously but also practice daily – talk to locals, order food in Mandarin, and make local friends. Be culturally open and curious. Taiwan's culture is rich and nuanced. Step outside your comfort zone, try new things, and be respectful of local customs. It's a chance to broaden your perspective immensely.
