Taiwan offers excellent academic resources, especially in semiconductor technology, which directly supports my career aspirations. As a global leader in the semiconductor industry, Taiwan provides unmatched opportunities for research and industry connections. The education system is world-class, with highly qualified teachers who are experts in their fields, ensuring I receive a top-tier education that prepares me for the future.

I chose NYCU because of its strong academic reputation, especially in semiconductor technology. The university has close ties with industry leaders like TSMC and MediaTek, which is a big advantage for my field. The INTENSE Program at ICST (International College of Semiconductor Technology) is tailored to train experts in semiconductors, perfectly aligning with my interests. NYCU’s high global rankings, quality courses, and the scholarship I received were also key reasons for my choice.

The INTENSE Program’s (offered by ICST) targeted focus on semiconductor technology and its direct relevance to industry needs were key factors in my decision. I was drawn to its unique design, which aims to develop precisely the skills companies require, allowing graduates to hit the ground running without needing additional training. ICST boasts of several professors who research on cutting-edge technologies in the semiconductor industry. I was particularly interested in the research of Dr. Niall Tumilty, who is my advisor. Our research focuses on growing hexagonal Boron Nitride on various substrates such as Cu, Saphire etc. Dr. Yu Sheng Su researches on development of advanced energy systems that leverage semiconductor materials and technologies. Moreover, I’ve been selected to participate in the summer internship provided by Micron Technology. It’ll provide me a unique opportunity to learn from the industry experts about the nuances of the semiconductor industry.

I've actively engaged in class by participating in discussions, asking thoughtful questions, and providing answers, which has been both challenging and rewarding. My professors frequently commend my contributions, sometimes offering small rewards like presents or verbal recognition, which motivates me to continue especially in the DRAM Design, Process and Application course. This interactive approach has significantly deepened my understanding of the subject matter and created a collaborative learning environment. Moreover, this engagement has helped me build confidence in my academic abilities and fostered meaningful connections with my peers and instructors. These classroom interactions have been a highlight of my academic experience in Taiwan.

Financial & Campus Support

The scholarship from the Ministry of Education and Micron Technology made pursuing my master’s degree financially feasible. This support alleviated the burden of tuition costs and allowed me to focus on my studies and personal growth.

The library services at NYCU are fantastic, giving me acess to specialized journals and databases on semiconductors. NYCU staff are very helpful to the students. NYCU conducts many events which enable students to enjoy their time in the campus while following a busy schedule. Academic events like seminars keep me updated on industry trends. Internship opportunities have been crucial for gaining practical skills and networking. The staff support has also been great, helping me with both academic and administrative challenges.

The swimming pool is my favorite spot on campus, offering a refreshing escape from academic pressures. Its sparkling, well-maintained waters provide the perfect setting for relaxation and fitness, helping me stay active and de-stress after long study sessions. The pool’s cleanliness and availability make it a joy to use, and it doubles as a social hub where I can meet friends or join swim clubs, fostering a sense of community. Swimming here boosts my physical health and enhances my overall campus experience by balancing relaxation, exercise, and social interaction. It’s an essential part of my routine.

Language Skill Development

I was eager to learn Mandarin, a language that holds immense value both personally and professionally. Studying in Taiwan offers me the chance to immerse myself in the language and develop a skill that will open doors in my career.

However, learning Mandarin has indeed presented several challenges, particularly with mastering the tones and characters. The tonal nature of the language requires precise pronunciation, as a slight change in pitch can completely alter the meaning of a word. Additionally, the thousands of unique characters demand significant memorization and practice, which can feel overwhelming, especially for someone coming from a language with an alphabetic system. 

Fortunately, NYCU provides excellent resources to support language learning. The university offers Mandarin classes specifically tailored for international students, which have been crucial in helping me improve step by step. These classes cover both spoken and written Mandarin, offering a structured environment to build foundational skills. Beyond the classroom, NYCU also hosts cultural workshops, which provide an immersive way to practice the language while learning about Taiwanese culture. These sessions make the process more engaging and help bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world application.

I believe the learning experience could be even more effective with the addition of continuous practice sessions. Mandarin, like any complex language, thrives on consistent and intensive practice. I feel that dedicating a few days to uninterrupted, highly focused practice sessions would allow for deeper immersion and faster progress. This approach would complement the existing classes and workshops, reinforcing what I’ve learned and building greater fluency over time.

Cultural Appeal & Personal Growth

Taiwan’s rich culture captivated me from the start. The kind and welcoming people have made my transition smoother and helped me feel at home. This warmth, combined with the country’s vibrant traditions, made Taiwan an appealing place to live and study.

Before moving to Taiwan, I worked in Dubai, where I learned to interact with people from diverse backgrounds. This experience taught me that speaking a customer’s mother tongue, even imperfectly, builds confidence and trust, creating a strong foundation for relationships. Studying and living in Taiwan has further shaped my personal growth, making me more independent and adaptable. Engaging with a community that speaks a widely used language has allowed me to immerse myself in their culture, enhancing my ability to connect with others effortlessly. Navigating a new country has honed my time management, problem-solving skills, and cultural appreciation. This journey has boosted my confidence and open-mindedness, enabling me to form meaningful relationships and adapt to various situations. The opportunity to embrace Taiwan’s vibrant culture and language has been the most significant aspect of my development, preparing me for global interactions.

Career Opportunities

I plan to stay in Taiwan after graduating to work in the semiconductor industry. My time at NYCU, especially in the INTENSE Program, has given me the skills and connections I need to succeed. The university’s career counseling and industry partnerships have helped me prepare for job opportunities, and the global exposure here will boost my career.

Comfortable Environment

The friendly environment and reasonable cost of living of Taiwan were significant factors in my decision. Additionally, the climate and landscape, with their lush greenery, are strikingly similar to Kerala, my home state. This familiarity has made Taiwan feel like a second home, easing my adjustment to life abroad.

In summary, Taiwan’s blend of academic excellence, financial support, cultural richness, and a welcoming environment made it the ideal choice for my studies. It’s a place where I can grow academically, culturally, and professionally while feeling connected to a landscape that reminds me of home.

For prospective students, I’d tell them to dive into the experience completely. With a clear goal and will to work hard, you can achieve a lot in Taiwan, both academically and personally. Use the academic resources like the library and research options, and ask for help when you need it. Learning Mandarin rewarding, especially to take the classes and join cultural workshops.
