Taiwan is a warm and thriving place that encourages international students to pursue their goals in a safe and supportive environment.
I chose to study in Taiwan because of its remarkable economic growth and exceptional educational facilities, particularly for international students. With the introduction of Taiwan's New Southbound Policy, there is a strong focus on attracting foreign students to the country, offering unparalleled opportunities for academic and cultural enrichment. Taiwan is renowned for its Mandarin language programs, providing an ideal environment to learn and practice Mandarin with locals. Moreover, the availability of scholarships further enhances the appeal of studying in Taiwan, making it an irresistible destination for pursuing higher education.
I chose National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) for its prestigious reputation and excellent faculty. Opting for the master's program in international politics offered me a unique opportunity to gain insights into global affairs while also understanding Taiwan's role in the international community. The program's distinctiveness from conventional offerings in Taiwan was appealing, providing a comprehensive perspective at both the international and local levels, and my experience so far has been wonderful.
Also, when I arrived at NCHU, there were many students from my country, and the Indian Association played such a role that even though I came to Taiwan alone, I didn't feel lonely. When I live abroad, I often crave the flavors of Indian food from my homeland. Cooking Indian dishes full of spices and flavor can be challenging in Taiwan. However, the facilities in the NCHU dormitory were excellent, providing access to a community kitchen where I could prepare my favorite dishes with plenty of spices. It was always a joy to cook, especially when my friends joined me. We would cook together and then share the delicious food we made.
NCHU is a place brimming with excitement, wherever you turn. Chung Hsing Lake provides a connection to nature, while the clever Chung Hsing ducks add charm to the scenery. The tree-lined street leading to the main gate instills a sense of empowerment, as if the towering trees are cheering you on. In winter, the fragrance of the trees refreshes me after a challenging day. The dark forest evokes a deep connection to the mountains, my homeland. Lastly, the 9th-floor balcony of my department offers stunning views of the mountains in Nantou.
Since arriving at NCHU, every day has been a challenging yet rewarding journey as I immerse myself in learning Mandarin. Whether I'm visiting the local stores or night markets, the language presents a constant test. Fortunately, the excellent platform provided by NCHU, the Office of International Affairs (OIA), and NUST (National University System of Taiwan) alliance has been invaluable in my language learning journey. Currently, I'm at the beginner level, but with dedication and support, I'm determined to progress further.
Besides my studies, I find joy in traveling and exploring the breathtaking destinations that Taiwan has to offer. Participating in the organized trips by the OIA has been an enriching experience that has deepened my connection to this beautiful island. Sometimes these events are organized by the OIA itself, while other times they are coordinated through the NUST or TCUS (Taiwan Comprehensive University System) alliances, allowing foreign students from various schools to experience Taiwanese culture together in different locations.
Thanks to the activities provided by the OIA, I have visited places like Chiayi and Tainan, where I not only got to know Taiwan's indigenous peoples but also learned more about Taiwanese culture and history through visits to old streets and temples. These activities not only provide international students with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan but also offer us more chances to interact with foreign students from not only local universities but also other universities.
Additionally, spending time with my Taiwanese friends has provided valuable insights into the local culture and society. Moreover, sharing Taiwanese meals with my labmates has become a ritual that allows for bonding through delicious food. These everyday experiences have truly made my time in Taiwan unforgettable and have enriched my life in countless ways.
One of my best memories was playing basketball with Taiwanese and international friends at the NCHU court. After a long, exhausting week, sometimes we make plans to play basketball, and afterward, we all enjoy Chung Hsing milk tea together.
I have had the privilege of participating in the TEEP (Taiwan Experience Education Program) internship program, focusing on ESG sustainable development for a duration of four months. This experience has been invaluable in providing me with a deeper understanding of Taiwan's commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through this program, I have been able to contribute to projects and initiatives aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and corporate governance. It's always beneficial to be admitted to a short-term program and later pursue a degree here. In my case, it gave me a close exposure to Taiwan and helped me make decisions. Visiting the faculty closely and meeting the professors and department helped me a lot in making decisions. Moreover, it increased the chances of getting admission to a degree program.
What I love most about Taiwan is the easy and convenient life here, but what I cherish most about my studies and life in Taiwan is the open and welcoming culture of Taiwanese society. Despite my forgetfulness, I've always been amazed by the honesty and organization of the people here. Whether it's retrieving lost belongings or receiving assistance in any situation, the unwavering readiness to help from the Taiwanese community is truly heartwarming and something I deeply appreciate.
I highly recommend Taiwan to my friends and family for its excellent study environment, safety, and thriving opportunities. Taiwan is a welcoming and flourishing country that actively invites international students to pursue their dreams in a secure and supportive setting. From the ease of studying to the overall safety and growth opportunities, Taiwan offers an exceptional experience worth exploring.
After completing my master's degree, I am eager to pursue my Ph.D. in Taiwan. I have truly fallen in love with this country and its remarkable opportunities for academic and personal growth.
