NCCU offers a diverse learning environment, including bilingual education, opportunities to improve Mandarin language skills, and exposure to Western approaches to international relations.
Study Abroad Motivation and Experience in Taiwan
Studying abroad presents an excellent opportunity to meet new and interesting people from diverse cultures, broadening one’s mind. My decision to study in Taiwan was fueled by several factors. Firstly, the desire to explore Asia and my curiosity for new experiences played a significant role. Additionally, the language environment in Taiwan was a key attraction, as I had already been studying Mandarin for four years prior to my arrival. This environment provided a fantastic opportunity to further develop my Mandarin language proficiency.
Taiwan’s natural beauty made a strong first impression on me. Despite undergoing quarantine for the first 14 days after arrival, I could still admire the mountains and forests, as well as the wind turbines situated in the sea, which I found particularly impressive.
Academic and Social Life at National Chengchi University
I chose National Chengchi University (NCCU) due to its prestigious reputation and the presence of a Department of Diplomacy, which closely aligns with my previous major in international relations and international law. The studying experience at NCCU was initially challenging, especially because of the quarantine which restricted my ability to attend classes and meet classmates. This led to a backlog of deadlines and papers. However, the teachers were understanding of the unique challenges faced by foreign students.
NCCU offers a diverse learning environment, including bilingual education, opportunities to improve Mandarin language skills, and exposure to Western approaches to international relations. While I missed many student events due to quarantine, I later joined the NCCU International Association, which organizes and conducts student events. Participating in these events allowed me to meet students from different departments and travel around Taiwan. Additionally, the university frequently organizes performances, job fairs, and competitions that are open to all students.
In terms of dealing with administrative tasks like health checks, alien residence certificates, and bank accounts, the Office of International Cooperation was instrumental in providing guidance. Eventually, things improved, and I was able to enjoy various aspects of student life, including celebrating the Western New Year and traveling.
Challenges and Outcomes of Studying in Taiwan
The main challenges I faced in Taiwan were related to paperwork and academic adjustments. The Office of International Cooperation was a great help in navigating these challenges. Classmates were also a valuable resource, assisting me with academic queries. Being determined and proactive is key to overcoming these challenges at Chengchi University.
As an international student, one significant benefit is the ability to leverage one’s nationality in the job market. For instance, Americans are often sought after for English teaching positions. Additionally, studying in Taiwan offers the chance to make connections with promising young individuals, which could be beneficial in the future.
Travels Around Taiwan
I have had the opportunity to travel around Taiwan, visiting places like Yeliu, Badouzi, Sun Moon Lake, Hualian, Taizhong, Kending, Gaoxiong, and Tainan. Among these, Sun Moon Lake stands out as an absolutely amazing and picturesque location with its clear water and eye-catching landscape. It is a place I would highly recommend and love to return to.
Future Plans and Advice for Prospective Students
After graduation, my plan is to return home as a qualified specialist in international relations with a strong command of Mandarin. This expertise should enable me to secure a great job in my country. As for staying in Taiwan, if I am offered a job that aligns with my major, I would be pleased to stay.
To students considering studying in Taiwan, my advice is to embrace the experience without fear of potential difficulties. The rewards and learning opportunities are immense.
