Studying Abroad and Choosing Taiwan

Studying abroad offers the opportunity to engage with diverse cultures and people from various educational backgrounds, which broadens horizons. My interest in Taiwan began during my senior year of secondary school when I attended an open house at NCTU (before its merger with NYMU). I was attracted to its diversity and excellent educational offerings.

Impressions of Taiwan and Selecting a University

The kindness, warmth, and caring nature of Taiwanese people were immediately noticeable, making it easy to seek help and feel comfortable. Their variety of delicious food also stood out. My interest in mechanical devices and a desire to design better mechanical systems to improve our lifestyle led me to choose Mechanical Engineering at NYCU. The high reputation of the university in Taiwan and its resourceful faculty, passionate about teaching and involved in various projects, influenced my decision.

Study and Life Experiences in Taiwan

The experience in Taiwan has been enriched by fascinating activities organized by both the university and Hsinchu city. The public transportation network is excellent, and public spaces are clean and tidy. As for my academic pursuits, NYCU provides ample research materials and equipment for practical training, which are invaluable for competition preparations and self-conducted projects. The university also offers diverse cross-disciplinary programs, allowing me to explore different fields of study.

Recommendations for Travel and University Life

I highly recommend visiting downtown Hsinchu for its well-preserved historical buildings and Hsinchu Harbour for its picturesque sunsets. For nature enthusiasts, the XiTou forest recreation area is a must-visit. NYCU is vibrant with various clubs and student activities, including night markets and music festivals organized each semester. The welcoming camp for freshmen helps new students acclimate before starting their academic journey. International and Overseas Chinese Student Associations provide assistance with paperwork and organize activities for networking.

Challenges and Coping Strategies

Despite being a native Mandarin speaker, I faced difficulties with paperwork in Taiwan. Fortunately, friends and faculty members were understanding and provided necessary guidance. The warm-hearted support from seniors and staff helped me overcome these challenges.

Outcomes and Benefits as an International Student

As an international student in Taiwan, I’ve gained insights into the academic and market environment, including exposure to cutting-edge technology and knowledge. Taiwan is notably foreigner-friendly, offering clear guidelines and substantial public assistance, even to those with limited Mandarin proficiency.

Future Plans and Perspective on Taiwan

My plan is to gain some work experience in Taiwan before pursuing further studies in America. I believe Taiwan should focus more on innovation and invention in mechanical design and product development within the industry. Additionally, improvements in workplace culture and the implementation of more flexible work systems in technology companies could enhance Taiwan’s appeal.

Advice to Prospective Students

I encourage fellow students considering studying in Taiwan to make friends, participate in activities, and immerse themselves in the culture and beauty of Taiwan. It’s important to actively spice up your life and enjoy your student experience. Remember, it’s always okay to seek guidance in your studies, and don’t hesitate to discuss issues with teaching assistants or professors, as they are always ready to assist. NYCU, in particular, is a great university that fosters an environment of support and learning.
