Living in Taiwan—especially in Kaohsiung—has truly been a transformative experience. The warmth and richness of Taiwanese culture have deeply shaped my personal growth and outlook on life.

Educational Journey in Taiwan

Taiwan stands as an example of overcoming challenges with minimal resources while simultaneously extending wholehearted support to those in need. This spirit of resilience and generosity deeply resonates with me. The opportunity to study in Taiwan, particularly at I-shou University’s School of Medicine for International Students, came as a blessing. I received a scholarship to complete my medical doctor degree here, immersing myself in a program intricately linked with the renowned E-Da Hospital. This association not only offers me exposure to outstanding medical professionals and advanced technology but also enriches my experience with exceptional research opportunities. My program, while academically rigorous, includes humanity courses and problem-based learning, broadening my educational horizon. The practical skills I’ve gained through my clerkship at E-Da Hospital are invaluable, contributing significantly to my personal and professional growth.

Personal and Professional Development

Living in Taiwan, particularly in Kaohsiung, has been transformative. This city, with its warm embrace, has become my second home. From its beautiful ports and unique buildings to its vast temples and vibrant night markets, Kaohsiung encapsulates the adventure that every day in Taiwan brings. The Taiwanese culture, rich and welcoming, has played a crucial role in my personal development, helping me create a new home away from home. The friendships I’ve formed here have been a source of comfort and strength, particularly as I navigated the challenge of being away from my family in Honduras. This new environment has broadened my perspective, enabling me to grow immensely as a person and a professional.

Academic Achievements and Challenges

In terms of academic achievements, I’ve participated in several national competitions, obtained an advanced care life support license, and developed practical skills through my clerkship. These accomplishments, alongside the anticipation of graduating in June 2023, mark significant milestones in my educational journey. However, this journey has not been without challenges. The greatest of these has been the distance from my family and friends in Honduras. Overcoming this challenge was made possible by the kindness of the Taiwanese people and the new friendships I’ve formed, which have provided a sense of belonging and support.

Extracurricular Activities

Despite the intensity of my medical program, I cherish the moments spent exploring Taiwan with friends. Our excursions include trying new restaurants, visiting museums, and immersing ourselves in Taiwanese culture. I particularly enjoy watching Asian movies in theaters and exploring night markets and parks, experiences that enrich my understanding and appreciation of this diverse culture.

Reflections and Comparisons

Reflecting on my experience in Taiwan, I find it challenging to encapsulate it in mere words. The efficiency, modernity, and cultural richness of Taiwan are aspects I often share with my family and friends back home. The contrast between the educational environments in Taiwan and Honduras is stark. In Taiwan, the focus on providing students with the best teachers, latest equipment, and optimal facilities is evident. This commitment to educational excellence starkly contrasts with the resource limitations I experienced in Honduras.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, my plans involve continuing my studies, possibly pursuing a residency program or a master’s degree in Europe. However, my primary goal is to return to Honduras and contribute positively to our health system. Taiwan has equipped me with skills and knowledge that I am eager to apply in my future career. While the idea of living in Taiwan in my later years is appealing, my immediate focus remains on utilizing the learnings and experiences from Taiwan to make a meaningful impact in my home country.
