I see Taiwan as a “mystery country waiting to be discovered.” Its unique mix of cultural influences from Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and America—combined with its stunningly diverse landscapes—makes it a truly fascinating place to explore.

Journey Beyond the Comfort Zone

I chose to study in Taiwan to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. It offered a chance to learn new languages, appreciate new cultures, and understand the world better. My decision was influenced by Taiwan being safe with high standards of living, affordable for my budget, and remarkably secure at night. The quality of higher education in Taiwan, with universities on the World Ranking list, and the friendly nature of the Taiwanese people further cemented my decision. Additionally, the opportunity to explore the beautiful island was a significant factor.

Taiwan: A Mysterious Country

I describe Taiwan as a “mystery country that needs to be discovered.” Its blend of cultural harmony from Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and America, along with its diverse landscapes, makes Taiwan an intriguing place to explore.

My favorite place in Taiwan is Taipei City, particularly the Taipei 101 Tower. The city, being the capital, is a mix of politics, economics, and culture. The contrast of ancient temples amidst skyscrapers and the combination of great restaurants, shops, and attractions like Taipei Zoo and Hsing Tian Kong Temple make it a captivating city.

Academic Choice, Enjoyment, and Challenges

I chose the Graduated Institute of Applied Geology at National Central University due to its relationship with my school in Vietnam. After working in Vietnam, I realized the need to upgrade my knowledge, skills, and language proficiency. My major in geotechnical engineering, which involves data analysis for building and infrastructure design, is both challenging and exciting. The presence of natural phenomena like volcanoes and earthquakes in Taiwan, which are rare in my country, adds to the thrill of my studies. In just six months, my most significant achievement has been completing the first semester with excellent grades and learning basic Mandarin, a language I was timid about while in Vietnam.

The initial challenge was the quarantine for twenty-one days upon entering Taiwan, but the school provided ample support. The language barrier was another hurdle, especially when ordering food, but learning basic Mandarin in the first semester helped me overcome it. I reassure my family and friends back home about the friendly, peaceful, and safe environment in Taiwan. I share my experiences of the educational system’s efficiency and the helpfulness of lab-mates and professors.

Life Beyond Academics

I often seek help from senior students in my laboratory, discussing over milk tea. Weekends are spent exploring Taoyuan with friends from Taiwan, Vietnam, and Indonesia, making my life here colorful and enriching. In the summer, we mix drinks, cook food, and plan trips to distant places to create memorable experiences together.

Future Career Benefits

Studying in Taiwan will benefit my future career in several ways. It offers expertise in my field of engineering geology and geotechnical engineering, a chance to learn Mandarin, and opportunities to work with various companies in Taiwan. Anyone studying in Taiwan will benefit from the excellent study environment, language opportunities, economic standards, and quality of life. It is an inviting destination for education, work, and exploration.

Future Plans and Desire to Stay in Taiwan

Post-graduation, I plan to gain experience in sustainable energy or a wind farm company. I may pursue a PhD in Taiwan afterward due to the cultural similarities with my country and the convenience of traveling back home. The reasons that make me want to stay for work and further studies in Taiwan are numerous and compelling.

Comparison with Home Country Education

Studying abroad, especially in Taiwan, offers unique benefits like language acquisition and global friendships. The educational environment in Taiwan, with experienced advisors and modern research equipment, contrasts with the limitations in my home country. For those considering Taiwan for study, it promises to be an enriching experience.
