Motivated by my father’s experience earning his PhD in Taiwan, I was inspired to follow a similar path. The country’s excellence in research, particularly in biotechnology, greatly influenced my decision to study here.
Educational Choice and Experience in Taiwan
Inspired by my father, who pursued his PhD in Taiwan and always spoke highly of the country’s education system, I chose to continue my studies here. The high quality of research, particularly in biotechnology, was a significant factor in this decision. National Chung Hsing University’s reputation in agricultural biotechnology, complemented by its experimental farm, provided the ideal environment for my studies. The convenience of working in both the lab and farm simultaneously has greatly enhanced my learning experience.
Personal Reflections and Achievements
Taiwan’s beautiful landscapes and cultural diversity, along with its achievements in democracy and health management, have made my stay here enriching. My favorite place, Sun Moon Lake, reminds me of my countryside home with its tranquil environment and picturesque mountains and lakes. The greatest learning achievement so far has been passing my PhD candidacy qualification examination. The praise and constructive feedback I received from the committee members were affirming and encouraging.
Overcoming Challenges and Life in Taiwan
Adapting to Taiwan’s different food items and warm weather posed significant challenges initially. However, by continuously exposing myself to these new experiences, such as eating typical Taiwanese foods like stinky tofu and working in hot weather, I became comfortable with these aspects of Taiwanese life. Sharing meals and exploring wonderful places with friends, discussing problems and future plans, has been a vital part of my experience in Taiwan.
Academic and Cultural Exchange
I regularly share updates about my academic achievements and research progress with my family and friends back home, along with my experiences of Taiwan’s culture and the new places I have visited. The advanced research areas, world-class research tools, leadership skills, and teamworking abilities I have developed here are assets I believe will significantly benefit my future career.
Future Plans and Comparative Analysis
Post-completion of my PhD, I plan to seek post-doctoral training in the United States to experience a research environment with comparable or superior standards. My ultimate goal is to become a pioneer in my field and share my knowledge and ideas in my home country. Comparatively, education in Taiwan emphasizes practical experiments alongside theoretical knowledge, which contrasts with the theory-based approach in my home country. The experienced professors, advanced research equipment, and facilities in Taiwan collectively contribute to a higher quality of education than what I experienced in my home country.
