Japan
I often tell my family and friends back home about the unforgettable experiences I’ve had in Taiwan, especially the warmth of its people and the breathtaking beauty of its landscapes.
Decision to Study in Taiwan
My interest in learning Mandarin, the world’s most widely spoken language, influenced my decision to study in Taiwan. This interest grew after meeting Taiwanese friends during my study abroad in Australia, leading me to explore more about their culture. The welcoming and generous nature of Taiwan, along with its delicious food, rich nature, and kind people, made it an ideal destination for studying abroad.
Educational Experience at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages
I chose Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages in Kaohsiung, preferring its abundant nature and calm atmosphere over Taipei. The university’s Department of Translation appealed to me as it offered the opportunity to learn both English and Mandarin, languages I consider indispensable for the future. The professors’ effective teaching methods in note-taking and accurate information conveyance during interpreting have been particularly beneficial.
Academic Achievements and Challenges
Improving my Mandarin listening skills has been my greatest achievement in Taiwan. Regular interactions with Taiwanese friends and listening to teachers in class have greatly enhanced my understanding of the language. I’ve progressed from not understanding Taiwanese dramas to enjoying them without any issues. Initially, group discussions in Mandarin and daily life challenges, like ordering at cafes, were difficult due to language barriers. However, I overcame these by participating actively in group activities, using simple words, and with the help of my Taiwanese friends who helped with my pronunciation.
Social Life and Cultural Integration
Outside of academics, I enjoy going to karaoke and shopping with friends. Initially, not understanding Mandarin songs made karaoke less enjoyable, but after practicing, I can now sing some songs and enjoy it. I also spend time exploring Taiwan with friends, visiting various attractions, and experiencing the local culture.
Reflections and Future Prospects
I frequently share with my family and friends back home about the unforgettable experiences I’ve had in Taiwan, praising the kindness of Taiwanese people and the beauty of the landscape. Studying in Taiwan has not only increased my language skills but also strengthened me mentally, teaching me resilience and problem-solving, qualities I believe will be valuable in my future career. The increasing global demand for Mandarin language skills further enhances the potential career benefits of my studies in Taiwan.
Future Plans and Comparative Analysis
While I haven’t yet decided on my post-graduation plans, working in Taiwan seems appealing due to its proximity to Japan, safety, and delicious food. Continuing to study in a Mandarin-speaking environment is essential for me to improve my language skills. Comparing the educational environments, Taiwan offers more opportunities for group studies and class discussions, which I find more engaging and beneficial for developing critical thinking skills, unlike the more lecture-focused approach in Japan.
