Ecuador
I decided to study at National Chiayi University because of its English-taught program and the relevance of its curriculum to my academic goals. Interestingly, a Spanish-speaking student from Taiwan reached out to share information about available scholarship opportunities, which further encouraged my decision.
Reasons for Choosing Taiwan and National Chiayi University
I was drawn to Taiwan due to my interest in Mandarin, which I began learning in Ecuador about five years ago. My Taiwanese teacher introduced me to the Huayu scholarship, leading me to Taiwan for a six-month Mandarin learning experience. During this time, I was captivated by Taiwan’s safety, people, food, and beautiful places, which motivated me to return for my Master’s Degree in Tourism and Management (MTM) at National Chiayi University (NCYU). I chose NCYU for its English-taught program and the relevant subjects in its syllabus. The helpful MTM staff and an easier application process compared to other schools were also significant factors. A Spanish-speaking student even contacted me from Taiwan to inform me about scholarship opportunities.
Perception & Favorite Activities of Taiwan
I view Taiwan as a hidden treasure in Asia with much to offer. In South America, many are unaware of Taiwan, often confusing it with other Asian countries. I aim to change this perception through TikTok videos to educate Ecuadorians about Taiwan. Taiwan combines elements of various Asian countries, along with its own unique traditions and warm, helpful people.
My favorite place in Taiwan is Sun Moon Lake, which I’ve visited four times. It’s magical, with its varying water colors and activities like gondola rides, hiking, and experiencing local indigenous culture. I also enjoy spending time with friends from school, trying new foods, visiting local restaurants, and engaging in outdoor activities like playing board games in parks. We’ve also traveled around Taiwan together, creating memorable experiences, such as watching Taipei 101’s fireworks on New Year’s Eve. Participating in government-organized activities like DIY and cooking classes has also been enriching.
Achievements & Challenges
Studying in Taiwan has been a significant learning achievement, especially gaining insights about world tourism from my diverse classmates and professors from various countries. This exposure has given me firsthand knowledge of tourism development in these nations, which I can apply to enhance tourism in Ecuador.
The primary challenge in Taiwan has been the language barrier. Despite previous study, I found it difficult to speak Mandarin fluently, especially after a three-year gap. Living in Chiayi, where most locals speak Taiwanese or Mandarin but not English, I’ve had to readjust to speaking Mandarin. Fortunately, the school offers Mandarin language classes, and I practice daily, with the local community being patient and helpful.
Comparing Educational Experiences
Comparing educational experiences between Taiwan and Ecuador, I find the teaching quality in Taiwan superior, with better technological support and facilities. Taiwanese professors offer an international perspective, enhancing the learning experience. The environment in master’s programs is similar in both countries, focusing on specialization and discussion-based learning.
Future Plans and Career Aspirations
Studying in Taiwan offers significant benefits for my future career, especially due to its Mandarin and Japanese influences and valuable local contacts for future business opportunities. My experience here will be highly valued in Western countries, particularly in the tourism industry. Additionally, Taiwan has contributed to my personal growth, providing a safe environment and a sense of belonging with my classmates and local friends.
I aspire to advance in the hospitality industry, aiming for supervisory or managerial roles in chain hotels, and eventually teaching future professionals. While I would like to stay in Taiwan, my expertise area requires proficiency in Mandarin, which I am still working on. If necessary, I will return to Ecuador with new ideas to implement there.
