Singapore
I decided to study in Taiwan because its art scene is vibrant, free-spirited, and full of color—quite different from Singapore’s still-developing art landscape, which I’d describe as being in its “emerging stage.”
Agnes’ Journey to Taiwan
I hold a Diploma in Arts Business Management and previously worked at Universal Studios Singapore as a Stage Management Coordinator. I pride myself on my time management skills and ability to produce quality work. I am also energetic and enthusiastic about learning. In my free time, I enjoy producing videos, listening to indie music, and working out. During Singapore’s circuit breaker, I developed a passion for cooking and baking, which can be seen on Instagram under #madebyalpz.
Choosing Taiwan for Film Studies
I chose to study in Taiwan because of its vibrant, free, and colorful art scene, which contrasts with the developing art sector in Singapore that I’d describe as in the “Emerging Stage.” Taiwan’s minimal censorship and thriving creative environment seemed ideal for unleashing my creativity and honing my skills.
I am currently pursuing a Degree in Motion Picture at the National Taiwan University of Arts (NTUA). My coursework includes Film Script Writing, Film Directing, Film History, and Introduction to Film and Film Production. I particularly enjoy Film Directing and learning about different industry equipment, like the Bolex 16mm film camera. Elective modules like Printmaking and Traditional Custom and Modern Society have broadened my understanding of art and culture.
Comparing Education in Taiwan and Singapore
In terms of technology, Singapore seems more advanced, with smart boards and widespread laptop usage. NTUA, however, maintains a traditional approach with chalkboards and handwritten notes. The educational systems also differ, which sometimes causes confusion when I explain why I’m a first-year university student at 22.
The teaching quality in Singapore includes a set syllabus with specific assignment deadlines at the start of the semester. In contrast, NTUA often provides general topic lists and assignment deadlines closer to submission dates.
Challenges and Overcoming Them
The biggest challenges I faced were the language barrier and homesickness. I overcame the language issue by seeking help and immersing myself in local culture. To combat homesickness, I explored Taiwan and stayed active, which helped me focus on the positive aspects of my experience.
Future Plans and Career Prospects
After completing my studies, I plan to travel and create travel videos, then find a job in the film or media industry. I’m open to returning to Singapore or staying in Taiwan, depending on job opportunities. Studying in Taiwan will broaden my horizons and enhance my creativity and skills, beneficial for my future career.
Achievements and Advice for Prospective Students
My greatest achievement so far is topping my class in the first semester. I also got approved to use the Bolex 16mm film camera, confirming my progress. For prospective students, it’s essential to be prepared for homesickness, seek help when needed, be aware of financial aspects, and stay focused on your studies.
