Solomon Islands
My choice to study in Taiwan was shaped by the meaningful contributions Taiwan has made to my country, such as establishing the national hospital and supporting various development projects.
I am a 25-year-old single father and currently a student at Ming Chuan University in Taiwan, studying communication. I’ve been in Taiwan for almost five years and will be graduating this year. I am the third of four boys in a family of six, and my parents have been my unwavering support.
My decision to study in Taiwan was influenced by Taiwan’s contributions to my country, including the national hospital and various projects. Additionally, my grandfather’s Chinese and Solomon Islands heritage inspired me to learn more about the language and culture of Taiwan. The Taiwan MOFA scholarship opportunity during my grade 13 further solidified my decision.
Academic Program and Experience
I am pursuing a program in Journalism and Communication at Ming Chuan University. The program, taught entirely in English, covers more than 30 subjects in journalism and communication. I am now in my final semester, focusing on my internship and graduation thesis. What I enjoy most is the diverse cultural environment in my classes, where I learn something new every day.
Comparing the educational systems of Taiwan and Solomon Islands, Taiwan stands out with more advanced facilities and equipment. The teaching quality in both places is commendable, but Taiwan’s educational institutions, including primary and senior high schools, are far more developed. The environment in Taiwan is more conducive to learning.
My greatest achievements include overcoming tough times, participating in school competitions, and forging strong friendships. These experiences have taught me about perseverance and the importance of having supportive people around.
Challenges and Overcoming Them
The most significant challenge in applying was obtaining my grade 11 certificate and dealing with passport renewal due to the introduction of electronic passports in Solomon Islands. I overcame these challenges by returning home to collect the necessary documents and renew my passport.
Future Plans
Studying in Taiwan has provided me with invaluable life lessons and experiences beyond academic knowledge. It has taught me resilience and given me the courage to pursue my goals despite challenges. This journey has been transformative, preparing me for future endeavors.
After graduation, I plan to stay in Taiwan for my master’s degree or to find a job. My attachment to Taiwan has grown, especially after my scholarship was terminated due to my country’s diplomatic switch to China. Taiwan has offered me numerous opportunities, and I wish to continue my journey here.
Advice for Prospective Students
Taiwan is an excellent destination for students of all ages. My advice is to be open and proactive in engaging with the Taiwanese community. Taiwanese people are welcoming, and Taiwan offers a balanced environment for both study and personal growth. Respect the local culture and embrace the opportunities Taiwan offers.
