Taiwan’s strong appreciation for the arts creates a genuinely supportive and inspiring environment for students like me.

My decision to study in Taiwan was unexpected. Initially, I had no plans to study outside Singapore. However, Taiwan captivated me with its cultural richness and vibrant performing arts scene. I admire many Taiwanese artists, such as movie directors Ann Lee and Hou Hsiao Hsien, and singers A-Mei and Jolin Tsai. Their success in the arts inspired me to pursue my studies in Taiwan, where I could nurture my passion and broaden my horizons. At 25 years old, I am navigating life with optimism, hoping to avoid any quarter-life crises. Art runs through my veins, and I am on a journey to become a performing arts practitioner.

Academic Experience

I am studying drama and acting at the National Taiwan University of the Arts. The program has been an exhilarating journey, allowing me to delve into various aspects of drama production, including design, scriptwriting, and performance. My favorite parts are the acting and directing classes, where we dissect stories, characters, and cultural contexts. This exploration has deepened my appreciation for films and the performing arts. The encouragement and constructive feedback from my teachers have been invaluable, pushing me beyond my comfort zone and helping me realize my potential.

Comparing Educational Environments

While the education system in Taiwan shares similarities with Singapore in terms of quality and facilities, the significant difference lies in the environment for arts education. Taiwan’s deep appreciation for the arts creates a nurturing atmosphere for students like me. The language of instruction was a transition, from English in Singapore to Mandarin in Taiwan, but being bilingual, this was not a hindrance for me.

Challenges and Overcoming Them

The biggest challenge in my application process was the uncertainty brought by COVID-19. I worried about admission and travel restrictions. Fortunately, Taiwan’s effective handling of the pandemic and the support from embassy staff and university administrators eased this process, allowing me to settle in smoothly.

Future Plans and Career Aspirations

Post-graduation, I plan to take up filming projects and continue my learning journey. I am excited to kickstart my journey as a performing artist, and I hope to make my debut as an actress in Taiwan’s thriving film industry. I dream that one day I will win the Golden Horse Award, and I want to build my career in Taiwan and make this dream a reality 🙂. The dynamic entertainment sector in Taiwan provides a promising platform for starting my career.

Benefits of Studying in Taiwan for Future Career

Studying in Taiwan is incredibly beneficial for my career as a performing artist. The country’s celebration of the arts and open environment offer ample opportunities for growth and development. The connections and experiences I am gaining here are shaping my confidence and guiding my career path.

Achievements in Taiwan

My most significant achievements in Taiwan include maintaining good academic results and forming strong friendships. These relationships with classmates and colleagues, both in school and work, have been a source of consistent support and cultural exchange. These friendships and my involvement in film projects are what I cherish most from my studies in Taiwan.

Advice for Prospective Students

For those considering studying in Taiwan, my advice is to seize the opportunity. Embrace the challenges and experiences that come your way. Taiwan offers a unique and enriching environment that fosters personal and professional growth. Remember, every challenge is a stepping stone to success, so enjoy every moment of this journey.
