I’m a cheerful, goal-oriented person who loves challenging life experiences that push me out of my comfort zone. I chose to study in Taiwan because it offered an opportunity to explore my major interest, biotechnology, and master a new language. Taiwan is very welcoming to international students. I was impressed by an educational fair in Jakarta, where I met a representative from NCKU who explained the university and my major of interest. Taiwan’s significant research profiles, accessible research opportunities, and high-ranking universities in Asia and globally influenced my decision. Additionally, the cost-friendly university fees and scholarships for distinguished students were appealing. A Taiwan summer camp experience, where I loved the culture, food, and teaching methods, further cemented my choice.

Academic Program and Enjoyment

I am studying biotechnology, focusing on programming DNA and microorganisms to create beneficial global applications. I am fascinated by how we can engineer biology to produce helpful nutrients, synthetic milk, and even concrete. My research has potential societal contributions, such as creating food for outer space, alternatives for vegans, and microbes for pollution reduction. The practical application of biotechnology excites me the most.

Comparing Educational Systems

The educational system in Taiwan differs significantly from Indonesia. In Taiwan, professors are open-minded, encouraging critical thinking and discussions. The supportive environment, with ample study facilities, tutoring classes, and professors willing to help international students, stands out. My university has a large, green campus, which provides a serene environment for studying and relaxation, in contrast to the crowded university settings in Indonesia.

Challenges and Overcoming Them

The primary challenge was choosing the right university, as some information wasn’t available in English. I contacted ICATI and Taiwanese-Indonesian graduate alumni for advice and assistance, which was very helpful in my application process.

Future Plans and Career Benefits

After finishing my studies in Taiwan, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in another country to gain different cultural and academic perspectives. However, I intend to maintain a connection with Taiwan, possibly through business ventures like exporting plant-based meat. Studying in Taiwan will benefit my career through professional connections, Mandarin language skills, and an understanding of the Taiwanese market. My research on microalgae will also be valuable in my future career.

Achievements in Taiwan

My most significant achievements in Taiwan include winning the grand prize at the iGEM competition, representing NCKU Tainan. This experience was a turning point for my personal and professional growth. Additionally, becoming a top student in my class is another achievement I cherish.

Advice for Prospective Students

For those considering studying in Taiwan, I recommend learning basic Mandarin for better integration. Achieving good grades in high school is essential for securing scholarships in Taiwan. Being open-minded and ready to embrace new cultures, along with maintaining a beginner’s mindset, will enrich your study experience in Taiwan.
