Kingdom of Eswatini
My experience in Taiwan has really widened my horizons and strengthened my belief that dreams are worth pursuing.
Decision to Study in Taiwan
Raised by a single mother with four siblings, I completed my matric in 2017 and, due to financial constraints, couldn’t attend university until I received an ICDF scholarship in 2020. My interests include reading, watching movies, and I have big dreams that sometimes scare me.
The dream of studying abroad led me to Taiwan, known for its technological advancements. The prospect of obtaining a mechanical engineering degree in a country with top-notch laboratories was irresistible. Taiwan’s safety, especially compared to the high crime rates in my country, and its efficient handling of the COVID pandemic, made it an appealing destination. The scholarship I received, given my inability to afford university in Eswatini, is something I’m eternally grateful for.
Educational Experience: Taiwan vs. Eswatini
Taiwanese education is superior in quality compared to what is available in Eswatini. While most students in Eswatini struggle with university fees and allowances, Taiwan offers a friendly, welcoming, and high-quality educational environment. Taiwanese universities are renowned for their scientific and technological research and education. The opportunity to study subjects that aren’t available in my home country due to technological limitations is a significant advantage. The safe and peaceful environment, the cleanliness and arrangement of classrooms, and state-of-the-art laboratories at Kun Shan University provide a complete learning experience. Interacting with friendly locals and international students from various cultures has been an enriching experience.
Challenges and Overcoming Them
The primary challenge in applying to study in Taiwan was financial. Despite the free application process, there were expenses related to medical checkups, COVID-19 tests, and quarantine fees. I managed these costs with savings from working as a nanny. The process was straightforward, and the support from the school staff was invaluable.
Future Plans and Aspirations
After completing my degree, I aim to further my studies or seek employment opportunities, either in Taiwan or back home. The high unemployment rate in Eswatini motivates me to seek better prospects elsewhere. My time in Taiwan has broadened my horizons and reinforced my belief in the power of dreams. I hope to share the knowledge I’ve gained here with my community.
Career Benefits of Studying in Taiwan
Studying mechanical engineering in Taiwan offers extensive benefits beyond the traditional scope of engineering. The entrepreneurial mindset encouraged here, exposure to diverse cultures, and advanced technological learning will be invaluable in my future career. Taiwan’s emphasis on innovation and staying abreast of new technologies will significantly enhance my professional capabilities.
Key Achievements and Learnings
My greatest achievement has been realizing that dreams are attainable. My confidence has grown, and I’ve learned to express myself more freely. Overcoming the challenges of learning Mandarin and adapting to a new culture has been a rewarding journey.
Advice for Prospective Students
