My goal is to become a leader in Thailand’s healthcare system, taking inspiration from Taiwan’s successful and innovative healthcare model.

My name is Siriluk Sithichoksakulchai, and I’m from Thailand. I’m a first-year PhD nursing student at the School of Nursing at Kaohsiung Medical University, where I’ve been for eight months. I completed my bachelor’s degree in nursing science in 2012 at Chulalongkorn University, and my master’s degree in gerontological nursing in 2018 at Mahidol University, Thailand. Since 2017, I’ve worked as a lecturer in the Department of Fundamental Nursing at Mahidol University. My expertise is in gerontological nursing and caregiving for older adults. I also consult for a senior citizen club. In November 2018, I attended a student exchange program at Osaka Prefecture University, Japan, for two weeks. My experience as a research assistant in a project on “Care Manager Role in Long-term Care in Thailand” inspired me to pursue a PhD to deepen my knowledge in elderly care, especially in long-term care, to better serve Thailand’s aging population. I believe the PhD program at Kaohsiung Medical University will equip me to be a knowledgeable LTC nurse for an aging society.

Decision to Study in Taiwan

I chose Taiwan for my PhD studies due to its first-rate healthcare system, particularly in elderly care. Taiwan, an aging society since 1993, has developed an excellent long-term care system, making it an ideal place to study this field. The country’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic further demonstrates its healthcare prowess. Taiwan’s academic professionals are highly experienced, and its universities rank well globally. Moreover, Taiwan offers government scholarships that cover tuition and living expenses, reflecting its commitment to education. The country’s environment, culture, and affordability also played a role in my decision. Taiwan’s four-season climate, cleanliness, friendly people, and convenient facilities make it a comfortable place to live and study. Its similarities to Thailand in terms of culture and cost of living make it feel like a second home to me. I’m grateful to the School of Nursing, Kaohsiung Medical University, for accepting me into their program.

Studying in Taiwan

The international doctoral program in nursing I’m enrolled in spans 2-7 years, including coursework and dissertation. It requires 36 semester-hours, with a focus on health promotion and exercise in older adults. The program challenges me to deepen my knowledge and critical thinking. The faculty are supportive, fostering a comfortable and empowering learning environment. I’ve also had the opportunity to learn about Taiwanese culture through various school activities. Taiwan’s education system, particularly in nursing, is impressive. The quality of teaching, the availability of technology in classrooms, and the comprehensive library system enhance the learning experience. The e-learning system is particularly useful. While there are similarities between Taiwan and Thailand in education, Taiwan’s higher ranking in nursing and more advanced online systems stand out.

Challenges and Plans

Applying to study in Taiwan during the Covid-19 pandemic was a significant challenge. I prepared extensively in terms of language proficiency and understanding my field of interest. Despite concerns about the pandemic, I managed to obtain a resident visa and comply with all regulations for safe entry into Taiwan. After completing my studies, I plan to return to Thailand to contribute to the Faculty of Nursing at Mahidol University, applying the knowledge and innovations I’ve acquired in Taiwan. I aim to be a leader in Thailand’s healthcare system, drawing inspiration from Taiwan’s model. I also plan to promote Taiwanese culture and educational approaches in Thailand.

Benefits and Achievements

Studying in Taiwan will enhance my career, particularly in the field of healthcare for older adults. The education and experiences I gain here will position me as a front-line policy maker in Thailand. My immediate goal upon returning is to educate nursing students about eldercare systems and collaborate with Thai experts to develop new healthcare models. In the eight months I’ve been in Taiwan, adapting to life and studies here has been a significant achievement. Overcoming initial homesickness and cultural differences has made me stronger and more focused on my goals.

Advice for Prospective Students

For those considering studying in Taiwan, it’s an excellent choice. Taiwan offers a range of disciplines, high-quality education, and a supportive environment. The kindness and friendliness of Taiwanese people, along with the country’s convenient living conditions and government scholarships, make it an ideal place for international students. Taiwan’s emphasis on education and culture provides a rich learning experience.
