Malaysia
Universities in Taiwan offer top-tier facilities—from well-equipped study spaces and modern classrooms to convenient recreational areas that are easy for students to access.
I’m the youngest of three sisters, and admittedly the most pampered in my family. I speak English, Mandarin, Malay, Cantonese, and understand about 80% of Hakka. In my free time, I enjoy playing piano, badminton, and occasionally cooking or baking. I’ve always been fond of dogs and dreamed of working with animals. If I had to describe myself in one word, it would be ‘ambivert’. Some people find me cool or unsocial, while others see me as friendly.
Decision to Study in Taiwan
I’ve always envisioned myself as a vet, which led me to choose Taiwan for my university education. Taiwan has four universities offering veterinary medicine to international students, which appealed to my keen interest in animals. Besides the availability of my desired course, Taiwan has always been a favorite travel destination of mine, especially since getting my first pet dog after visiting Alishan, Chiayi. Another major factor was affordability - Taiwan’s tuition fees are more reasonable compared to other countries. The absence of a language barrier, since my native language is Mandarin, also made Taiwan an ideal choice.
Academic Program
I am studying for a bachelor’s in veterinary medicine at National Chung Hsing University. The course covers various aspects of animal medicine, including disorders, diseases, and injuries. The early years focus on the anatomy, physiology, and overall structure and function of healthy animals. Later years delve into disease diagnosis, treatment, and control, with the final year concentrating on clinical application in various settings. What I enjoy most is learning about the muscles and nerves of animals, despite its complexity.
Academic Experience in Taiwan
The educational approach in Taiwan differs significantly from Malaysia. In Taiwan, there is a greater emphasis on understanding concepts rather than just memorizing for exams. The learning environment at NCHU is welcoming, with kind and friendly classmates. Taiwanese universities provide excellent facilities, including well-equipped study areas and classrooms, and easily accessible recreational facilities.
Challenges of Studying Abroad
The biggest challenge in applying to study in Taiwan was dealing with the complex procedure of getting my certified transcript authorized while already in Taiwan. With the help of my parents and some online research, we managed to resolve this issue on time.
Future Plans and Staying in Taiwan
After completing my studies, I plan to stay in Taiwan to become a certified vet. I believe the veterinary industry is more advanced here than in Malaysia, offering better opportunities for learning and application. I might consider further studies later, but initially, I want to settle into my career.
Career Benefits
The educational environment in Taiwan is conducive to developing highly competitive skills. The lecturers are knowledgeable and share practical knowledge and real-life experiences, preparing us for the industry. I believe this will make me more competitive than local graduates in Malaysia.
Personal Achievements
One of my greatest achievements while studying in Taiwan is gaining more confidence, particularly in overcoming my fear of public speaking. I’ve also become more independent, handling tasks like moving houses and managing financial statements on my own, which is a significant step in personal growth.
Advice for Prospective Students
For those considering studying in Taiwan, thorough research on universities and programs is crucial. Be prepared for homesickness, but also be ready to embrace the enriching experience Taiwan offers. Don’t hesitate to make this choice!
