Bangladesh
Faculty in Taiwan are highly qualified and well-respected in their fields, and students benefit from a calm, focused environment that supports serious study.
My name is A T M Badruzzaman. I am from Bangladesh, located in southeast Asia. I am a registered veterinary doctor in my country and completed my graduation in veterinary medicine and master’s degree in pathology from Sylhet Agricultural University, Bangladesh. In my personal life, I am married, and my wife is a faculty member at the Veterinary, Animal, and Biomedical Science Faculty of Sylhet Agricultural University, Bangladesh. I am currently a PhD student at the National Central University, Taiwan.
Decision to Study in Taiwan
Taiwan is a wonderful country, often described as the heart of Asia. It boasts a rich scientific tradition, with research fostered through cooperation among universities and research centers. Taiwan’s blend of traditional, ancient, and modern aspects creates a unique, energetic civilization. The friendly, honest people, freedom of religion, and the cultural vibrancy, including festivals and exhibitions, greatly appealed to me. These factors motivated my intention to pursue higher studies in Taiwan.
Academic Program
I am enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy program in Molecular Medicine, a joint initiative by the Department of Life Sciences of National Central University (NCU) and the Department of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology of National Health Research Institutes (NHRI). My research focuses on developing a Virus-Like Particle (VLP) vaccine for seasonal influenza. I am learning various techniques and gaining insights into local culture and history. Additionally, I am learning Mandarin at NCU, which I believe will deepen my understanding of this beautiful country.
Comparison with Home Country
Taiwan’s educational system offers high-quality teaching, superior facilities, and advanced laboratory instruments compared to Bangladesh. The faculty members in Taiwan are highly educated and respected in their fields, and students enjoy a tranquil study environment. There is a greater emphasis on practical, research-based learning in Taiwan, utilizing the latest technologies, whereas our educational system in Bangladesh is more theoretical.
Challenges in Applying to Study in Taiwan
The main challenge was obtaining a visa from Bangladesh due to the absence of a dedicated agency for student visas. The process of obtaining a visa guarantee letter and its verification is time-consuming and costly. I had to quit my job to complete visa formalities in Taipei. Easing this process would encourage more Bangladeshi students to pursue education in Taiwan.
Future Plans
After completing my studies, I plan to develop my research career in molecular biology in Bangladesh, working alongside health and environmental professionals. I aim to use my knowledge and skills to address infectious diseases affecting our livestock, wildlife, and human populations.
Impact on Future Career
Studying in Taiwan, at institutions like NCU and National Health Research Institute (NHRI), will allow me to join international institutes or organizations as a researcher. I could also join a university in Bangladesh as a faculty member, sharing my knowledge through lectures, training, and workshops. The interdisciplinary research skills I acquire will enable collaboration with professionals and organizations in Taiwan.
Achievements in Taiwan
In the short time since I’ve been in Taiwan, I have learned various techniques in molecular biology and the development of vaccines. I am currently working on developing a universal vaccine candidate for influenza virus infection, using insect cells to amplify proteins. This work marks a significant achievement at the beginning of my PhD studies.
Advice for Prospective Students
