I’m impressed by how Taiwanese professors manage to strike a healthy balance in their teaching—challenging us without placing unrealistic demands on students.

Academic Experience in Taiwan

I chose to study in Taiwan primarily to complete my master’s degree, a requirement for my role as a college instructor. After researching, I found Taiwan to be the perfect choice for its quality of education, healthcare, and technology. It also has the advantage of being close to my home country. I am studying biomedical engineering, a multi-disciplinary major, under the Electrical Engineering Department. The subjects like design concepts of assistive devices, biostatistics, digital signal processing, and digital image processing have been enlightening. The most enjoyable aspect has been collaborating with international students from diverse backgrounds.

Comparing Education Systems

Having been in Taiwan for nearly two years, I’ve noticed significant differences between the educational systems of Taiwan and the Philippines. I am impressed by the balance Taiwanese professors strike in their teaching, without imposing unrealistic expectations on students. The accessibility to facilities and equipment here is remarkable, especially for research. This experience has made me hopeful for similar improvements in the Philippines.

Challenges and Aspirations

The major challenge I faced in coming to Taiwan was managing the procurement and approval of necessary documents while still teaching in the Philippines. I managed this by planning ahead and seeking help when needed. After my studies, I intend to return to my university in the Philippines due to a contractual obligation. My goal is to establish a laboratory that caters to the needs of students, especially in basic electronics. Studying in Taiwan has equipped me with knowledge and skills that I plan to integrate into my teaching and to enhance my students’ potential.

Achievements and Advice

My key academic achievement in Taiwan has been presenting papers internationally, a milestone I had not envisioned before. Balancing my studies with personal health and maintaining an exercise routine has been another significant achievement. I make it a point to exercise daily to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In my free time, I enjoy playing musical instruments, reading, writing a blog, and engaging in sports like badminton and Frisbee. Spending quality time with my family is something I cherish deeply.

To future students considering Taiwan for their studies, I advise maximizing the holistic experience offered here. Taiwan’s excellent education system, healthcare, and culture provide a unique opportunity for growth. Building genuine connections and adopting best practices here can positively influence others wherever you go next.
