Studying in Taiwan gives you a one-of-a-kind learning experience that goes beyond coursework, helping you grow in both language abilities and interpersonal communication skills.

Taiwan Education Experience

My journey in Taiwan began with a plan to attend Fengchia University’s Chinese Language Center for six months, which I extended for another half year. After returning to Indonesia in December 2018, I realized I wasn’t ready to leave Taiwan. This led me to enroll in a bachelor’s program at Overseas Chinese University, returning to Taiwan in February 2019. My choice of Taiwan for learning Chinese was influenced by my interest in traditional Chinese characters (I had studied in China before) and recommendations from my cousins who had studied in Taiwan.

I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration at Overseas Chinese University. With an associate degree already in hand, I could transfer credits, enabling me to complete the bachelor’s program in 2.5 years instead of 4. The most enjoyable aspect of my studies is the challenge, particularly since the program is entirely in Mandarin, which tests my language skills. I value the support I receive from my teachers and classmates and the personal growth in independence and resilience that comes with overcoming these challenges.

In my leisure time, I enjoy traveling and have a fondness for several places in Taiwan, including the Chimei Museum in Tainan, Ximending Night Market in Taipei, Taroko Gorge National Park in Hualien, and Gaomei Wetlands in Taichung.

Comparison with Home Country

Studying in Taiwan offers a unique learning experience that extends beyond academics to encompass language and interpersonal communication skills. The experience is rich with personal skill development and life lessons, fostered by interactions with locals and an environment that is conducive to learning. The supportive community, excellent public transport, and impressive school facilities make Taiwan an ideal place for international studies, incomparable to my experiences in Indonesia.

Challenges in Applying to Study in Taiwan

Applying to study in Taiwan presented several challenges, particularly with credit transfer due to my previous studies in China. The political relationship between Taiwan and China made document legalization complex. Additionally, learning that my chosen program was entirely in Mandarin was daunting, given my language proficiency at the time. However, I saw this as an opportunity for growth and decided to proceed.

Impact on Future Career

Studying in Taiwan is advantageous for my future career. Taiwan’s reputation for quality education is recognized in Indonesia and globally. Mandarin language skills are increasingly sought after in the business world, making my education in Taiwan a significant asset for my career, whether in Indonesia or elsewhere.

My achievements in Taiwan include learning to read and write traditional Chinese character, scoring well in my Mandarin-taught business courses, and achieving financial independence by working part-time as an English teacher. These accomplishments have fostered a sense of pride and self-reliance.

I am captivated by Taiwan’s excellent infrastructure, medical facilities, and living convenience. My desire is to stay in Taiwan post-graduation if I can secure a suitable job. Despite the competitive job market, I am open to exploring opportunities to start a small business. I also aspire to engage more in community services and social work within Taiwan.

Advice for Prospective Students

I encourage prospective students to study in Taiwan, despite initial challenges like language barriers and cultural differences. The initial difficulties soon give way to a fulfilling experience filled with friendly interactions, delightful cuisine, and a welcoming atmosphere. Every experience in Taiwan, whether challenging or enjoyable, offers valuable life lessons and memories that last a lifetime.
