A degree from Taiwan, known for its excellence in technology and innovation, is highly valued.
Decision to Study in Taiwan
I chose Taiwan for further studies to keep abreast of the latest trends in environmental sustainability, especially in the construction industry. The IESD program at NCU appealed to me because of its scholarship and Taiwan’s proximity to Manila. Learning Mandarin and the influence of the TV show Fun Taiwan also played a significant role in my decision. I’m excited to immerse myself in Taiwan’s local culture, learn more about its community and language, and make meaningful connections.
Professionally, I am a licensed civil engineer and have previously worked as a college instructor. I enjoy outdoor activities, musical instruments, gardening, and fishing. My life revolves around minimalism and sustainability advocacy.
Academic Experience
I’m majoring in environmental technology at NCU, where I have the freedom to select courses from various majors. I’ve taken courses like environmental engineering, photovoltaic engineering, satellite geodesy and navigation, and environmental economics. The program is challenging, but I enjoy it. The diversity among my classmates, coming from different parts of the world, enriches the learning experience.
Initially, I was apprehensive about the language barrier and adapting to a new teaching style in Taiwan. However, I found that most NCU professors are proficient in English, having studied in the United States. The university’s international student population is impressive, as are the well-equipped classrooms and reliable internet service.
Adapting to Taiwanese culture has been a significant achievement. I’ve made friends with locals and international students and learned basic Mandarin, which has made interacting with the community easier. I’m also impressed with Taiwan’s efficient transportation system and the convenience it offers for daily life.
Application Challenges
The biggest challenge during the application process was traveling to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Manila for document verification, a journey of five hours from where I live. Despite the inconvenience of multiple trips and the need to carry all necessary documents, I managed to submit my application on time.
Future Plans and Career Prospects
After completing my studies, I plan to return to the Philippines and resume teaching, sharing new perspectives on sustainable development. I am also open to opportunities in Taiwan and would consider working here for a few years. For now, my focus is on my studies and what the future holds.
Studying in Taiwan is likely to enhance my career prospects, especially in securing a permanent teaching position. A degree from Taiwan, known for its excellence in technology and innovation, is highly valued. Additionally, the multicultural environment and Mandarin skills are beneficial in the globalized job market.
Advice for Prospective Students
I would say “just do it!” I encourage anyone considering studying in Taiwan to seize the opportunity. The country’s friendly environment, manageable language barriers, and numerous adventures make it an excellent choice for international students. The advanced infrastructure and connectivity ensure a comfortable and connected living experience.
