Indonesia
The diverse connections I’ve made and my deeper understanding of Taiwan’s education system will really benefit me, especially when combined with the growth I’ve made in both English and Mandarin.
Since September 2018, I’ve been engaged in doctoral studies at the Department of Electro-Optical Engineering, National Formosa University, and became a Ph.D. candidate in 2019. My focuse is on optical communication. The program provides up-to-date and comprehensive equipment, which significantly supports learning and research. The opportunity for innovation and the lecturers’ appreciation of students’ ideas have been particularly enjoyable. The faculty members are humble and attentive to students.
What I consider my most significant achievement in Taiwan was the improvement in research capability and success in publishing in reputable journals. This was made possible through the guidance and support of my lecturers. I learned effective research methods, the importance of novelty in ideas, and efficient paper writing skills.
I received the Elite scholarship from the Ministry of Education (MOE), Taiwan. Currently, I am also the Chairperson of the Indonesian Student Association at National Formosa University. Besides studying, I teach the Indonesian language at the Language Training Center, National Formosa University.
Challenges in Applying to Study in Taiwan
The main challenges were related to obtaining information and language barriers. The information on university websites was often outdated, and communication with university staff was unclear due to language differences. I overcame these challenges by connecting with current students in Taiwan through social media for clearer information.
Post-Study Plans and Preference to Stay in Taiwan
Studying in Taiwan has enhanced my knowledge in optical communication technology and research skills, which are invaluable for my lecturing career in Indonesia. The diverse connections and understanding of the Taiwanese education system will be beneficial, along with improved language skills in English and Mandarin.
After my studies, I plan to return to Indonesia due to a contractual obligation with my university. My goal is to apply the knowledge from my doctoral program to contribute to technological development in Indonesia.
