Philippines
Taiwan’s strong commitment to healthcare and research has really stood out to me, and it’s something I’m excited to bring back and share with people in my home country.
Academic Journey and Experience in Taiwan
In the Philippines, I was a college instructor teaching electronics. I’m currently pursuing a master’s in electrical engineering in Taiwan. Studying in Taiwan was an opportunity I couldn’t miss. I’ve always been fascinated by the diverse culture and educational opportunities here. This experience has allowed me to meet people from around the world, exchange ideas, and immerse myself in different cultures. This diversity has helped me grow socially, emotionally, and skill-wise.
I am in my last year of coursework, majoring in biomedical engineering. My subjects include biomedical signal processing and analysis, digital image processing, power systems, power quality, assistive device and technology, biostatistics, renewable energy, and advanced robotics. The most enjoyable part of this journey is being a student again and having access to excellent educational resources, something I didn’t experience back home.
Coming to Taiwan was both challenging and fulfilling. The biggest challenge was discovering my pregnancy a week before my flight. I had to balance my career aspirations with my new role as a mother. Thankfully, both my employer in the Philippines and the university in Taiwan were supportive. Balancing motherhood and studies has been tough, but it’s a challenge that I embrace every day.
My time in Taiwan has contributed to my holistic development. Emotionally, it was challenging to leave my young son in the Philippines, but this sacrifice is for our future. Socially, making friends from different cultures has been fulfilling. Learning Mandarin is also a significant achievement, as it’s a valuable skill in today’s global environment.
Comparing Educational Experiences
There’s a huge difference between studying in Taiwan and in the Philippines. Taiwanese universities have better facilities, more equipped laboratories, and advanced technology. The teaching quality is excellent in both countries, but the availability of resources in Taiwan provides a more enriching learning environment.
Future Plans
Studying in Taiwan will significantly benefit my career. In the southern part of the Philippines, biomedical engineering is not a common field. My experience here will open new opportunities for pioneering research and possibly help in introducing a biomedical engineering course at my university. The exposure to Taiwan’s investment in health and research is something I’m eager to share back home.
After completing my studies, I plan to return to the Philippines and share my knowledge with my students. While I enjoy living in Taiwan, being away from my family is difficult. However, I might consider pursuing my doctorate in Taiwan in the future, possibly with my family.
Advice to Future Students
For those interested in studying in Taiwan, I advise you to enjoy learning and explore the country. Adjusting to a new environment can be challenging, but engaging with the community, such as through a Host Family program, can ease the transition. Managing finances and considering part-time work can also be beneficial, as Taiwan offers good compensation and benefits.
