Taiwan has offered me the chance to experience a variety of work environments across different communities, and those experiences have really strengthened my adaptability and expanded my social network.

I’m a positive and ambitious person who loves to experience new things and be adventurous. I enjoy drawing, reading, traveling, and studying. As a tenacious person, I don’t give up easily. Throughout my life, I have encountered many difficulties and failures, but I always see them as chances to encourage myself to become a more mature and better person. My all-time favorite quote is, “Failure is the mother of success.”

Choosing Taiwan & Application Process

First of all, Taiwan is one of the safest countries in the world, which is really important to me. I can completely concentrate on my studies without having to worry much about safety. The quality of education in Taiwan is outstanding, which is the best thing Taiwan can offer a student like me. Moreover, people in Taiwan are super friendly and warm-hearted, making me feel really welcomed. As an adventurous person, I would like to explore more out of my box. When I experienced Taiwan personally, I truly discovered sides of myself that I hadn’t noticed before. I am a really independent and responsible person and can adapt easily in a new environment. To sum up, Taiwan is such a beautiful country, and I won’t ever regret studying here.

The greatest challenge of applying in Taiwan was the meticulous process of gathering all the necessary documents. In 2017, I had to take two tests: the HSK 6 Mandarin test and the IELTS English test, which were necessary documents for applying to a university in Taiwan. I felt quite stressed at that time, as the application deadline was close, but I didn’t give up and kept studying. I dedicated every second of my spare time to study. Finally, I qualified and was accepted, and it was the best feeling ever as my hard work paid off. That is why I feel so grateful to be able to study here.

The Taiwan Education Experience

I am currently studying for a bachelor’s degree in fashion design and merchandising at Shih Chien University. Becoming a fashion designer has always been my dream since I was a little kid, and being able to learn subjects that I love is an incredible feeling. My all-time favorite subject is none other than fashion design class. We learn how to persuade ideas, brainstorming techniques, digital drawing, and the teacher offers valuable feedback to improve our designs. This subject makes me eager to explore wild ideas, something that has never been done before, something creative in a high fashion way. Other than enjoying the classes, I also enjoy the company of my friends and roommates. I feel so lucky and blessed to have met them here in Taiwan. They are seriously the nicest people and always help me during hard times. This makes me feel like I have another big family here in Taiwan.

The comparison of teaching quality between Taiwan and Indonesia is that teachers in Taiwan don’t restrict students to follow their methods. We can be much more creative and expressive during our lessons by asking questions and speaking up about our opinions. I think this is a very effective way of teaching in the designing sector because it allows us to embrace our identity better and think outside the box, which boosts our creativity. The university environment is very peaceful and calming, with beautiful surrounding nature, perfect for concentrating. The school’s facilities and equipment are also more than sufficient, as we have classrooms dedicated to sewing and pattern-making, a gym, a swimming pool, basketball courts, etc. Overall, I’m very satisfied with my school.

Important Achievements

The most important achievement I have reached this year is becoming one of the 20 finalists in the ECLAT 9th Eternity Design Competition. Although I didn’t win the competition, I’m still very happy to have experienced one of the largest design competitions nationally. Other achievements include becoming a committee member of our school’s foreign Chinese students club and the fashion design and merchandising department. These positions have taught me a lot about teamwork and bonding with a group of people in an organization. I also worked three different part-time jobs during the summer break. Taiwan has given me chances to experience different working environments in these diverse communities, which improved my adaptability and social networking skills.

Benefits of Studying in Taiwan & Future Plan

Studying abroad in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, which is 3,196 km from my hometown, is really helpful for my future career. Firstly, I can improve my Mandarin communication skills and learn more about beautiful traditional Chinese writings. Moreover, I can meet many international friends and exchange cultures, ideas, and languages with them. Secondly, studying abroad really broadens my horizon and vision. It has developed my way of thinking and seeing things. I’m able to seize every opportunity decisively and have become much more sociable. All these qualities will definitely help me in the future when I’m working and pursuing my career.

After getting my bachelor’s degree, I will probably get a job related to the department I’m in right now, which is fashion design and merchandising. I would like to stay in Taiwan and enter the fashion industry here because there are much more opportunities, and I would like to personally learn more in-depth about the working norms here in Taiwan. Improving my own social skills and working mindset. At some point, after I have gathered the much-needed working experience, I would also like to continue my education by applying for a master’s degree in fashion design here in Taiwan.

Advice for Prospective Students

First of all, Taiwan is such a beautiful country, and the people here are so kind-hearted, so don’t be afraid to explore the country and communicate with the locals. Even if there’s a language barrier, I’m very sure that Taiwanese teachers and friends will be more than happy to assist you in improving your communication skills. Meeting people from around the world will be the most interesting experience, as you will be exchanging cultures and languages with them. Just be open-minded and adapt to your surroundings, then you will notice that everything will go smoothly, and you will gain so many benefits and valuable experiences. Push away all your doubts and worries, believe in yourself, and you will definitely fall in love with this unique and incredible country.
