Thailand
I’ve found Taiwan to be very education-driven, providing great scholarship opportunities for motivated students.
Pushing through Doubts and Choosing Taiwan
This is my first time being far from home. Initially, I felt a mix of excitement and fear. It’s always challenging for me to start something new, but studying in Taiwan has proven to be a worthwhile step out of my comfort zone. I’ve encountered new friends, cultures, and experiences here, making it an invaluable journey. I’m glad I seized this opportunity and hope everyone can stay healthy and safe, especially during the 2020 epidemic.
Before completing my bachelor’s degree, I extensively researched options for studying abroad. I found Taiwan to be education-focused, offering scholarships to determined students. Most management course universities here are AACSB accredited, which I deemed vital for my potential future PhD studies.
The acceptance from the university marked a significant moment in my life. The Office of International Affairs (OIA) at the university is particularly attentive to international students. Taiwanese peers are welcoming and kind. Joining the university orchestra club was a warm and inclusive experience, even before I arrived in Taiwan.
The biggest challenge for me was overcoming fear and self-doubt, especially when facing stiff competition for scholarships. Support from friends and family was crucial in helping me push through these doubts. They encouraged me to do my best, alleviating the fear of disappointment and helping me secure the scholarship.
Major & School
My major is global finance, covering subjects like fund management, investment trend analysis, and financial technology. This was a shift from my undergraduate studies in engineering. The professors are excellent, making complex concepts understandable despite my limited background in management and finance. My classmates are supportive, always ready to help clarify doubts.
The academic environment in Taiwan is similar to Thailand, with the noticeable difference being smaller class sizes at the master’s level, allowing for more interaction and opinion sharing in class. Professors encourage student participation, making classes a platform for idea exchange.
The university’s pleasant weather allows for engaging outdoor activities. I enjoy playing squash and socializing with teachers and peers, fostering a sense of community and care.
Career Benefits & Future Plan
Studying in Taiwan has expanded my global perspective, thanks to interactions with international friends and up-to-date teachings from professors. Mandarin, being a critical language globally, is another skill I’m enhancing here, which I believe will benefit my future career prospects.
Post-graduation, I plan to extend my stay in Taiwan, possibly pursuing further studies or Mandarin scholarships. My proficiency in Mandarin needs improvement since my primary course is in English, and I practice Mandarin only a couple of hours each week.
I’ve grown to love Taiwan for its welcoming atmosphere, good weather, and convenient transportation. If my language skills suffice, I might consider working here, as I feel a strong connection with the country.
Important Achievements
A significant milestone during my time here was participating in the university concert. Despite the language barrier, the band members were supportive, aiding in musical practice and language exchange. This collaborative effort culminated in a successful performance, which was a testament to our months of training and teamwork.
Advice for Prospective Students
To those considering studying in Taiwan, my advice is to give it your all. It’s natural to feel apprehensive about moving to a new country with a different language. However, the experience is enriching. Taiwan is exceptionally foreigner-friendly, with kind and helpful locals, friends, and teachers. Beyond academic knowledge, you’ll gain insights into a new language, cuisine, and forge long-lasting friendships. Embrace the challenge and believe in your success.
