With everything I’ve learned and experienced in Taiwan, I hope to help raise the standards of Indonesian industries and inspire my future students to take part in international exchange programs.

Choosing Taiwan: A Strategic Decision

I hold a machelor’s degree in Agricultural-Industrial Technology and a master’s degree in economics and business from Brawijaya University, Indonesia. With four years of experience as a continuous improvement supervisor at Heinz Kraft Indonesia Co. Inc., I led and participated in several profit improvement projects. Notably, I improved optimization in soy sauce sachet production and reduced waste in cane sugar processing, leading to a second-place finish in the 2014 National Continuous Improvement Competition.

Taiwan boasts an exceptional higher education system, offering a wide range of subjects for international students, particularly in industrial management science. The country’s industrial sector, encompassing ICT, electronics, frozen food, and machinery, has seen significant growth in recent years. The advanced industrial technology in Taiwan aligns well with my background and expertise. I believe studying here will provide valuable opportunities to learn from leading industrialists and engage in cutting-edge research. Additionally, as Mandarin is the most widely spoken language globally and Taiwan’s national language, learning it will enhance my cultural understanding and broaden my international perspective.

Academic Pursuits: Majoring in Supply Chain Management

I am a doctoral student at the Institute of International Management, National Cheng Kung University, specializing in supply chain management within the College of Management. The curriculum, including courses in management (quality management, production and operation management), quantitative methods, and specialized research methodologies, aligns with my research interests in total quality management and supply chain management in enterprises. The department’s credibility, quality education, and the hospitality of the lecturers, staff, and colleagues greatly enrich my academic experience.

The teaching methods in Taiwan and Indonesia are generally similar to those in other Asian countries, especially regarding the duration of education from elementary to bachelor’s degree. However, Taiwan’s education system is notably superior, evident in the qualifications of its professors and teachers, many of whom have studied in the USA and Europe. The strong educational backgrounds of the lecturers broaden students’ international perspectives and enable the application of advanced technology systems. Enhancing the quality of human resources in Indonesia is crucial to achieving parity in educational quality across regions.

The primary challenges of studying in Taiwan include adapting to its rigorous education system and language barriers. Initially, I struggled, particularly after receiving low scores on mid-term examinations. However, encouragement from my family reminded me of my purpose in Taiwan. I began working harder, participating in group discussions, and spending more time studying in the library. This dedication allowed me to acclimate and achieve good grades.

Future Ambitions: Contributing to Indonesian Education and Industry

Taiwan’s higher education system, known for its qualified lecturers and advanced technological environment, offers significant benefits for international students. The industrial sector, characterized by a mix of large companies and SMEs responsible for 85% of industrial output, exemplifies Taiwan’s technological prowess. The robust education system and industrial landscape will greatly benefit my future career as a lecturer and industrial engineer, allowing me to transfer valuable insights and practices from Taiwan to Indonesia.

Upon completing my Ph.D. in Taiwan, I aspire to return to Indonesia as a lecturer. My goal is to contribute to the growth of micro-scale industries, collaborating with small-medium enterprises in my hometown, renowned for its soybean chip industry. I aim to apply my research on supply chain management to enhance competitive advantages and performance in industries. With the knowledge and experiences gained in Taiwan, I hope to set a benchmark for Indonesian industries and inspire my future students to pursue international exchange opportunities.

Celebrating Success: Achievements in Taiwan

During my studies in Taiwan, I have actively participated in student activities, including Toastmasters and the International Student Union. Toastmasters, a global club focused on public speaking and leadership development, has seen me deliver three successful speeches and win the title of best evaluator on December 9th, 2018. I also presented a lecture at the 2018 Global Forum “Sweetbitter,” hosted by the Office of International Affairs, National Cheng Kung University. I consider my ability to immerse myself in Taiwan’s culture and be a part of its community as my greatest achievement during my time here.

Guidance for Future Students: Embracing Taiwan’s Culture

To prospective international students considering Taiwan for their studies, I strongly recommend learning Mandarin to fully engage with the country’s rich culture, traditions, and breathtaking landscapes. Taiwanese people are known for their kindness and warmth. To truly experience Taiwan’s heritage, it is essential to communicate and interact using their national language. Learning Mandarin is not just about language acquisition; it’s about feeling the warmth and authenticity of Taiwan, the heart of Asia.
