Malaysia
The high expectations set by my professors, along with the supportive academic environment here, have made my transition into the workforce much smoother and more confident.
Decision to Study in Taiwan
I graduated from National Cheng Chi University (NCCU) last year with a double bachelor’s degree. This is my sixth year in Taiwan, a place I’ve grown to love and consider my second home.
After high school, I received a full scholarship from Singapore University in design. However, my internship experience made me realize my preference for work involving interaction with people. Uncertain about my future, I was drawn to Taiwan’s convenient university application system and applied to the public administration department at NCCU. After my bachelor’s, I wanted to deepen my understanding in advertising. Despite offers from universities in the UK, I chose to stay in Taiwan, joining NYCU’s Management of Technology (MOT) department, attracted by the country’s friendly environment and my desire to work in the technology sector.
The biggest challenge in applying to study in Taiwan was dealing with my relatives’ misconceptions about Taiwan and concerns about language barriers. I addressed the language issue by choosing English courses and engaging in international activities, which helped me adapt and integrate into the Taiwanese educational system.
Exploring Management of Technology at NYCU
As a graduate student in the MOT department at NYCU, I am engaged in a study program that fuses engineering, science, and management. The curriculum involves planning, developing, and managing technology strategies within organizations. I’ve developed a passion for organizing and planning, and this program has broadened my knowledge in areas like machine learning, artificial intelligence, patent law, and financial management. It’s been a fulfilling experience learning to become well-rounded in these diverse fields.
I moved to Taiwan at 19, having previously studied in Malaysia. The teaching style in Malaysia focused more on theory, while in Taiwan, education is more practical. For example, during my advertising studies at NCCU, we participated in competitions and interacted with industry professionals, gaining real-world insights and practical skills that closely align with industry demands.
Future Plans Post-Graduation
Studying at prestigious universities like NCCU and NYCU has been highly advantageous. The high standards set by the professors and the supportive academic environment have facilitated my smooth transition into the workforce. Taiwan’s education system has effectively guided me onto my career path.
After completing my master’s degree, I intend to work in the technology sector in Taiwan. My educational and social networks here have laid a strong foundation for my career. I plan to gain work experience in Taiwan for a few years before considering opportunities in the USA.
Key Achievements in Taiwan & Advice for Prospective Students
My biggest takeaway from Taiwan is the efficient flow of information and the accessibility to government resources. The opportunity to develop user-friendly UX and UI designs has been a significant part of my learning experience, equipping me with relevant skills for my future career.
For those planning to study in Taiwan, learning Mandarin is helpful but not mandatory. However, it’s important to adapt and not expect others to accommodate your needs. Embracing change and being self-reliant are key to a successful and enriching experience in Taiwan.
