Indonesia
The most exciting part of my studies has been receiving guidance from a world-class researcher, and I’m confident that this mentorship will play a major role in my future success.
My name is Delvina, a third-year Ph.D. student at the Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP), a collaborative program between National Central University (NCU) in Taoyuan and Academia Sinica in Taipei. Before enrolling in the Ph.D. program, I completed my master’s degree at the School of Public Health, Taipei Medical University. Since 2014, I have had the privilege of studying in Taiwan, which has become my second home. My goal is to become a professor in my hometown, creating an impact not only in my country but also in Taiwan.
Decision to Study in Taiwan & Application Process
About five years ago, in March 2014, I decided to study in Taiwan. This decision was influenced by several factors, including encouragement from friends who had previously studied here. They shared how professors in Taiwan genuinely care about their students, treating them not just as learners but as research partners. This level of mentorship contributed to my decision, as both my former (Taipei Medical University) and current university (NCU) are among the top 100 in the QS Asia rankings.
I faced minimal challenges when applying for a master’s program in Taiwan. The online application system was user-friendly, and clear guidelines were provided. The key to a successful application lies in the willingness to learn from current students and a sincere desire to exceed program requirements. It’s crucial to start preparing well ahead of deadlines. Ensuring the program meets your academic needs and preparing the necessary skills for admission and completion are essential.
Learning from World-leading Researchers
My studies are based at the College of Earth Sciences, NCU, and the Research Center for Environmental Changes at Academia Sinica. My dissertation focuses on ground-level air pollution and its health impacts. I am engaged in interdisciplinary research that combines public health and atmospheric sciences. The most exciting part of my studies is being mentored by a world-leading researcher, which I believe will greatly contribute to my future success. In addition, I appreciate the facilities provided by NCU and AS, including stipends, subsidized tuition fees, 24-hour access to study rooms, world-class scientific journal access, and grants for international conference participation.
My motivation to study in Taiwan stems from the desire to surpass my academic achievements in my home country. This ambition has only grown through experiencing Taiwan’s excellent education system. There are numerous lessons I plan to take back to Indonesia, such as empowering students to exceed their limits and developing study facilities, including laboratory equipment, books, and access to reputable journals and conferences, to inspire both students and faculty.
Post-Study Aspirations
As an aspiring professor, it’s crucial to publish high-quality papers in international journals, a task made easier under the mentorship of my professor, who has numerous publications in leading journals. My current academic environment, including my professor, school, and research institution, will directly benefit my future career. Beyond academics, Taiwan’s diverse international student community is an excellent opportunity to expand my international network, build friendships, and engage in cooperative endeavors.
After completing my studies in Taiwan, I plan to contribute to my country as a university professor. While I cherish my education in Taiwan, serving my homeland, where less than 30% of lecturers hold doctoral degrees, is my calling. Nevertheless, I will continue to initiate research collaborations between Taiwan and Indonesia, as I did in 2018, benefiting both countries.
Significant Achievements
I am honored to be a recipient of the prestigious Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP) fellowship from Academia Sinica and National Central University. This program provides exceptional scientific training and outstanding facilities, both academically and socially. I am proud of winning research funding from AI-SOCD (Advanced Institute on Disaster Risk Reduction with Systems Approach for Slow-Onset Climate Disasters) in 2018, in collaboration with an Indonesian principal investigator and team, under my professor’s mentorship. Alongside academic accomplishments, I have been developing leadership skills as a representative of the TIGP-Graduate Student Association (2017-2018).
