Taiwan’s international atmosphere, presence of global industries, and welcoming attitude toward immigrants were major reasons I was drawn here.

I completed my bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at Udayana University, Bali. My goal is to become a technology developer in the field of education, specifically in Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS), integrating cognitive tutors with collaborative learning.

I chose to study in Taiwan after learning about it from a senior who completed his education there. Taiwan’s multinational environment, foreign industries, and friendly attitude towards immigrants greatly appealed to me. The country’s quality of education, highlighted by many professors receiving awards as inventors, assured me that I would get good guidance. Taiwanese products, known for their quality and durability in Indonesia, also played a role in my decision.

The biggest challenge in applying to study in Taiwan was meeting the English proficiency requirements. I dedicated myself to learning English, using resources like YouTube, taking a TOEFL course, and practicing speaking with foreigners through video calls. I financed my English courses and TOEFL books by working after completing my bachelor’s degree, keeping my aspirations a secret from my parents until I was accepted at NCU.

Academic Experience at NCU

I am studying in the Department of Network Learning Technology at National Central University, a program available only for master’s and Ph.D. students. This department focuses on integrating education and technology, including human elements, machinery, ideas, procedures, and management. The most interesting part of my study is learning about learning support tools such as YouTube, Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS), e-learning, and web-based simulation. I aim to develop these learning tools, especially for Bali, where technology in education is still relatively scarce.

Adapting to the environment and building relationships with classmates and lab mates, despite language barriers, are significant achievements. I overcame these challenges by learning Chinese and initiating conversations. Choosing the right professor who shares my vision has also been crucial in my academic journey.

The differences between studying in Indonesia and Taiwan are substantial, especially in terms of facilities and the sense of responsibility of teachers. Taiwanese facilities are complete and well-maintained, and the learning environment is conducive for foreign students. The instructors are respectful and adapt their teaching for better comprehension, often repeating lectures in two languages. The discipline of students and teachers in Taiwan is noteworthy.

Future Plans

Studying in Taiwan teaches integrity and perseverance, qualities essential for building a career. The Taiwanese people’s empathy and integrity positively influence my outlook on the future. The environment here cultivates discipline, which I find more important than mere intelligence in career development.

After graduation, I wish to stay in Taiwan for 1-2 years to work, appreciating the similar environment to Bali. However, learning Chinese is a necessity for staying, and I find it challenging. Ultimately, I plan to return to Indonesia to apply what I’ve learned, aiming to improve the Indonesian education system and become a leading lecturer and researcher. Sharing my knowledge and experiences with students in Indonesia is my primary goal.

Advice for Prospective Students

I advise prospective students to have a strong intention and work hard towards their goals. Belief in visualization and positive energy is crucial. If you have something to fight for, embrace the struggle and work towards achieving your dreams.
