Malaysia
Taiwanese people are unbelievably supportive — always ready to share what they know and jump in to help whenever you need it.
Journey to Choosing Taiwan and the Application Process
Growing up as an ethnically Chinese in Malaysia, I was immersed in Mandarin, Hokkien, and Cantonese, fostering a deep love for Chinese culture and languages. This passion led me to teach Chinese language at a Chinese Independent High School after completing my degree. I cherish traveling and meeting diverse people, sharing these experiences with my students to inspire them to step out of their comfort zones.
Taiwan holds a special place in my heart, second only to Malaysia. It’s a blend of delicious cuisine, stunning scenery, rich culture, and, most importantly, the kindness of its people. Taiwanese are incredibly supportive and eager to share knowledge and lend a helping hand. Taiwan, especially Taipei, offers a comfortable, safe living environment with excellent transportation. These factors influenced my decision to pursue further studies in Taiwan for a new life experience.
Since I completed my bachelor’s degree outside Taiwan and applied personally for a master’s program there, I initially lacked information about the application process. Thankfully, the University Entrance Committee For Overseas Chinese Students website provided all the necessary details clearly. Additionally, The Federation of Alumni Association of Taiwan University Malaysia was really helpful in offering briefings and assistance with visa applications.
My Academic Journey in Taiwan
I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL), covering various subjects like Chinese linguistics, culture, teaching methods, and second language acquisition. The goal is to mold us into high-quality teachers in the Chinese language education field. We’re expected to acquire key knowledge and develop relevant academic skills. The aspect I enjoy most is learning diverse teaching methodologies, which I believe will enhance my abilities as an educator.
The most significant difference for me is the language of instruction. In Malaysian universities, it’s primarily English or Malay, but in Taiwan, it’s Mandarin. Also, Taiwanese campuses are vast, often requiring bicycles or shuttles for transportation. Another unique aspect is the international student body, offering opportunities to learn about various cultures and share about Malaysia.
The human connection in Taiwan is incredibly touching. My friends here have been supportive, helping me cope with homesickness and embracing me into their culture. They have shown me around Taiwan, introduced me to unique foods and fruits, and generously shared their knowledge. These friendships are invaluable and will stay with me forever.
Plans for the Future
My current program emphasizes both theoretical and practical learning. We engage in internships and attend numerous seminars in addition to textbook learning. This comprehensive approach bolsters my teaching skills and broadens my knowledge, preparing me for my future career.
I aspire to be a Chinese language teacher after my studies. I’m eager to share the beauty of the language and its culture with students. Given Taiwan’s “New Southbound” policy and the influx of foreigners, I see an opportunity to stay and teach Chinese in my favorite country.
Encouragement for Prospective Students
I STRONGLY recommend studying in Taiwan. It’s a chance to experience a different lifestyle, witness Taiwanese hospitality, and enjoy fantastic food. Studying here is a unique experience that I urge everyone to try. It’s important to be open-minded: take part-time jobs, learn new skills or languages, and make friends from around the world. Taiwan offers a chance to broaden your horizons in countless ways.
