For anyone thinking about studying here, my advice is simple: don’t stress it. Taiwan is super welcoming and genuinely friendly — you’ll fit right in.

Pursuing studies in Taiwan has been a fulfillment of my dream. Prior to my enrollment, I dedicated many years to an NGO as a volunteer. Bolstered by support from my peers, I embraced this challenge to realize my aspirations.

My decision to study in Taiwan stemmed from attending workshops led by Taiwanese facilitators. Their profound knowledge and extensive experience left an indelible impression on me. The professionalism of the teaching team was a key factor in my choice. Additionally, the field I’m interested in is particularly advanced here. Moreover, being a native Mandarin speaker, I encounter no language barriers, enabling me to fully absorb the knowledge imparted in class.

Academic Journey in Guidance and Counseling

I am enrolled in the School Guidance and Counseling Program at the Department of Guidance and Counseling. My coursework has included mandatory subjects like introduction to ssychology and introduction to guidance, elective topics such as family life education and interpersonal relationships, and mandatory university courses in Mandarin and English. The inclusion of general education subjects, like chemistry and life application, adds variety to my learning experience. The practical insights shared by our instructors, drawn from real-life scenarios, greatly enrich our learning.

In my home country, public universities are preferred for their affordability and superior teaching quality, though gaining admission can be challenging. Private institutions, while more accessible, tend to be costlier. In contrast, Taiwan offers high-caliber education with doctorate-level instructors and excellent facilities at a lower cost. The frequent guest lectures from industry professionals and scholars enhance our learning experience.

I was pleasantly surprised by the wide range of elective courses available, allowing me to tailor my education. The flexibility to explore Taiwan during breaks has been an enriching part of my overseas study experience, marking a significant step out of my comfort zone.

Overcoming Age-Related Challenges

My biggest challenge in pursuing education in Taiwan was my age, as I had been working for several years before deciding to study here. Navigating the administrative procedures like visa applications and medical checkups was initially daunting, but comprehensive guidance from the university’s website and assistance from current students eased the process. Despite having savings, financial concerns were significant. Thankfully, as a ethnically Chinese student, I received grants covering my first year’s tuition and living expenses. Earning a working permit allowed me to secure a part-time job to support myself financially.

Future Aspirations and Plans

The field of counseling is highly advanced in Taiwan, providing students with access to top-notch workshops and experienced speakers. Graduating from here signifies thorough, systematic training. Studying abroad has broadened my perspective, exposing me to diverse cultures and global happenings – a crucial aspect of my professional development.

I aim to pursue higher education, potentially up to the doctorate level, to deepen my understanding of counseling theories. The opportunity to interact with experts in the field is invaluable. Should I secure a promising job in Taiwan, I am inclined to extend my stay, furthering my professional growth and eventually bringing this knowledge back to my home country. The prospect of a better salary is also a compelling reason to develop my career here.

Guidance for Future Students

To those considering studying here, I say: don’t worry. Taiwan is a welcoming and friendly place, with designated departments and staff in schools and the government ready to assist. The absence of a language barrier facilitates both communication and study. For those willing to exert effort, numerous study grants and scholarships are available. Obtaining a working permit for part-time employment is straightforward, offering various opportunities to manage your expenses. Embrace this chance to explore and grow while you’re young. You’ll discover numerous opportunities for self-enhancement.
