Philippines
Studying in a country as technologically advanced and culturally rich as Taiwan has been a real blessing — it’s opened up my perspective and pushed me to grow in ways I never expected.
Journey to Taiwan: Choosing a Destination and Navigating the Application Process
As a second-year Ph.D. student in Physics at National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU), I’m deeply engaged in researching 2D materials. Simultaneously, I’m a visiting student researcher at the Nanoscience and Nanodevices Laboratory at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU). Before embarking on this academic journey, I was a physics faculty member at the University of the Philippines, Los Baños. My interests include American TV shows like Friends and Stranger Things, photography, and creating animations.
Taiwan attracted me with its vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and strong academic reputation. Its proximity to the Philippines, just a two-hour flight, makes visits from family convenient. The strong diplomatic ties between our countries, evidenced by the substantial Filipino community here, also played a role in my decision. Pursuing my Ph.D. in Taiwan seemed like an opportunity to open new doors for my future.
The biggest challenge in applying to Taiwanese universities was managing the demanding documentation process while working as a faculty member. The bureaucratic requirements, involving lengthy travels and extensive paperwork, were daunting. Nevertheless, with support from friends, I managed to meet all application deadlines.
Exploring Physics at NSYSU: Academic Life and Research
Under Prof. Feng-Chuan Chuang’s guidance, I’m pursuing my Ph.D. in physics at NSYSU, focusing on 2D materials within the Computational Materials Laboratory. Additionally, I’m involved in research at NTHU’s Nanoscience and Nanodevices Laboratory. My coursework in physics, including electrodynamics and studies in selected research topics, allows me enough time for my research. The diversity of my classmates, coming from various backgrounds and cultures, makes the learning experience both challenging and enriching.
The educational systems in Taiwan and the Philippines have similarities in teaching styles but differ significantly in resources. Taiwanese universities boast well-equipped classrooms and state-of-the-art labs, whereas the Philippines, as a developing country, struggles with resource limitations.
Vision for the Future: Career Prospects and Aspirations
Studying in Taiwan will undoubtedly benefit my career, particularly in research. This experience abroad gives me an edge in my field, likely easing my return to academia in the Philippines. The connections I’ve made here are invaluable for future collaborations. I’m open to working in Taiwan, attracted by the competitive salaries and excellent benefits, but returning to my previous university in the Philippines also appeals to me, given my strong ties there. Additionally, I’m considering opportunities abroad for postdoctoral research.
Significant Milestones: Acquisitions and Achievements in Taiwan
The most significant achievements of my Taiwan experience include the invaluable knowledge gained, friendships formed, and the mastery of Mandarin. Since arriving in 2017, I’ve attended numerous workshops and seminars, expanding my network in condensed matter physics. Learning Mandarin has been essential for daily interactions and is a significant personal accomplishment.
Guidance for Future Scholars: Embracing Opportunities in Taiwan
My advice for prospective students considering Taiwan is to embrace the opportunity wholeheartedly. The experience of studying in such a technologically advanced and culturally rich country is a blessing that broadens perspectives and fosters personal growth. Overcoming the initial fear of leaving one’s comfort zone is part of the adventure. Immersing oneself in a new culture enriches understanding and appreciation of diversity.
