Philippines
Even though I received an offer from a university in the United States, I ultimately chose Taiwan because it’s close to the Philippines, offers education on par with the U.S., and has a strong emphasis on research—all of which made it the better fit for me.
As a licensed chemist, registered nurse, and medical doctor from the Philippines, currently lecturing at a local engineering school, I chose Taiwan for my Ph.D. in biomedical engineering. Despite an admission offer from a U.S. university, Taiwan’s proximity to the Philippines, comparable education quality, and strong research focus influenced my decision. Taiwan’s burgeoning research capabilities, especially in scientific papers, offer me a chance to enhance my skills affordably, with minimal cultural adjustments due to geographic and cultural closeness.
The application process at my Taiwanese university was impressively smooth and entirely online. While challenges arose due to high bank fees and bureaucratic delays in the Philippines, I found workarounds like having a friend in Taiwan pay the application fee. Applicants should plan well in advance, ideally starting the process 2-3 months before the intended travel date, to navigate these bureaucratic hurdles efficiently.
Biomedical Engineering Studies in Taiwan
Pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering in Taiwan allows me to contribute to a field still developing in the Philippines. My research focuses on medical biosensors, and I am currently developing a biochip for rapid and precise disease diagnosis. The resources, mentorship, and learning opportunities here are exceptional, combining my medical background with engineering innovations. This experience contrasts significantly with my educational and teaching experiences in the Philippines, particularly in terms of faculty qualifications and available resources.
Aspirations Post-Ph.D.
My time in Taiwan has been immensely rewarding, offering exposure to diverse cultures, languages, and research opportunities. Winning awards at conferences and building international connections have been significant achievements. This journey has not only advanced my professional skills but also enriched my personal growth and adaptability.
The education and experiences in Taiwan will be foundational for my future in the Philippines. Post-Ph.D., I plan to establish a laboratory focusing on biosensor technology for disease detection and diagnosis. My goal includes fostering research in biomedicine and training graduate students in molecular biosensors and bioelectronics. Despite the appeal of working in Taiwan, my commitment to return to the Philippines remains, aiming to maintain a collaborative relationship with my Taiwanese university.
