The Art of Taking a Step Forward

My name is Trishtend Harlie, and I’m from Indonesia. I’m currently studying International Media and Entertainment Management at I-Shou University in Taiwan. Looking back at my journey here, I’ve realized that sometimes, a single step is all you need to open new doors.

Every day starts simple—waking up, getting ready, heading to class. I scan my bus ticket, walk into the classroom, sit down, and prepare to learn. In class, I focus, take notes, and work on hands-on projects like video production and creative media assignments with my classmates. Our program encourages us not only to study theory but also to practice and create.

There were many moments when a professor asked, “Who wants to come forward and present?” I used to hesitate. But each time, I chose to take a step forward. I couldn’t have imagined that those small steps—presenting in class again and again—would eventually lead me to stand on a TEDx stage, sharing my ideas with a much larger audience. That experience showed me how consistency truly opens doors to unexpected opportunities.

Beyond academics, my life in Taiwan is filled with meaningful friendships and adventures. I’ve traveled with friends to places like Xiaoliuqiu and other beautiful destinations, capturing memories through photography and enjoying the views together. I’ve joined school projects, participated in competitions, and even had the chance to speak in front of cameras for university events. Each experience helped me grow more confident and creative.

Even something as simple as running reminds me that progress begins with one step. With every step I’ve taken in Taiwan—whether in academics, extracurricular activities, or personal challenges—I’ve achieved more than I ever expected.

Studying in Taiwan has allowed me to pursue my passion, build strong connections, and discover opportunities I once thought were out of reach. So if you’re thinking about studying abroad, remember: sometimes, a step is all you need.
