Paraguay
Studying at NKUHT offers valuable connections and paves the way for a wide range of global career opportunities.
Hello, I’m Ariel, often nicknamed Oreo due to a quirky misunderstanding of my name. I hail from Paraguay, the heart of South America, and have been residing in Taiwan for two years. I am currently studying hotel management at the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism, a leading institution in this field across Asia.
Motivation for Studying in Taiwan
My journey to Taiwan began with a serendipitous internet discovery of the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism. Intrigued, I researched more about Taiwan and found parallels with my homeland, recognizing it as the heart of its region. Taiwan’s progress, I believe, is significantly linked to its high-quality higher education. The country’s friendly, safe, tolerant, and openminded environment appeared perfectly conducive for any international student, leading me to the question: why wouldn’t anyone want to study in Taiwan?
Academic Program and Experience
As a sophomore at the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism, I am majoring in hotel management. NKUHT is not only renowned in the hospitality industry but also highly favored in leisure and recreation. The department offers comprehensive teaching and focuses on practical experience, highlighted by a unique one-year internship program designed to cultivate skilled professionals.
Comparison with Home Country
The educational experience in Taiwan is vastly different from Paraguay. My home country lacks a specialized university in the hospitality industry and is limited in field-specific research. In contrast, NKUHT offers advanced technology and a well-structured internship program, which is not commonly found in Paraguay. This program is especially beneficial, as it provides structured job opportunities, unlike the self-sourced internships back home.
Challenges and Overcoming Them
The biggest challenge has been stepping out of my comfort zone and adapting to a new language and culture. Since my major is taught in Chinese, overcoming the language barrier is crucial. I constantly strive to improve my language skills and believe that a positive attitude is key to overcoming such challenges and building connections.
Future Plans and Career Prospects
After graduation, I plan to stay in Taiwan for an additional year to gain work experience in a distinctively different environment. This will help me understand the industry better and identify practices applicable to the hospitality field in Paraguay. Given the strong diplomatic relations between Paraguay and Taiwan, I also see potential in enhancing tourism for both countries.
Benefits for Future Career
Studying at NKUHT provides a strong network and opens doors to global opportunities. The university’s reputation in leisure and recreation not only benefits my prospects in Taiwan and Paraguay but also globally. The competitive environment in Taiwan has prepared me to be a valuable asset to any company.
Achievements in Taiwan
During my time in Taiwan, I have evolved professionally and personally. I have improved my language skills, engaged in leadership activities at university, and maintained top academic performance despite language barriers. Living in Taiwan’s open society has broadened my perspective on various topics.
Advice for Prospective Students
For students considering studying in Taiwan, my advice is to learn the language. Being able to communicate in the local language enhances the overall experience and immersion in Taiwanese culture. Don’t hesitate to delve into the culture – the initial fear is worth overcoming for the rich experiences that await.
