Paraguay
My greatest accomplishment has been building a supportive family-like community and forming lasting friendships during my time in Taiwan.
I am Carlos Javier Espinola Rotela from Coronel Bogado in the south of Paraguay. At 24 years old, I enjoy barbeques and picnics with friends and am known for my studious nature. I like learning new things, be it musical instruments, languages, or new skills. Growing up in a multicultural environment has made me open-minded and eager to learn about different cultures.
Decision to Study in Taiwan
My journey to Taiwan began in high school when I discovered League of Legends and the Taipei Assassins team. This sparked my interest in Taiwan’s culture, technology, and resilience against natural disasters. Limited information in Spanish and my modest English skills didn’t deter my curiosity about Taiwan’s culture, language, and characters. Learning about scholarships offered by the Taiwanese government to Paraguayans for bachelor’s studies, despite the lack of local information on such opportunities, motivated me to pursue my education in Taiwan.
Academic Program and Experience
As a mechanical engineering student at the National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech), I’ve gravitated towards mechatronics. My coursework has included digital circuits, industrial automation controller applications, mechatronics systems and design, and numerical methods. The numerical methods class, where we built a self-driving car project, particularly inspired me and led me to pursue a master’s degree.
Comparison with Home Country
In Paraguay, educational resources were limited, especially in my countryside hometown where rain often disrupted classes. My high school in Paraguay lacked the variety and specialization available in Taiwan, and I had to settle for an accounting major due to limited options. In contrast, NTUT provided advanced resources like lathe and welding machines, and all professors had PhDs, which was a significant step up from my educational experiences in Paraguay.
Challenges and Overcoming Them
The greatest challenge in applying for the scholarship was the geographical and logistical hurdles. Traveling from my city to the capital, dealing with bureaucratic processes, and facing potential rejection due to document issues were daunting. However, with perseverance, support from kind individuals at the Ministry of Education, and a bit of luck, I managed to submit my application successfully.
Future Plans & Career Benefits
Accepted into the NTU mechanical engineering control systems master’s program, I plan to stay in Taiwan to complete my PhD. My ambition is to contribute to future generations through my research. I feel indebted to Taiwan and want to give back through my work.
Studying in Taiwan, known for its top universities and semiconductor industry, will benefit my career significantly. Being multilingual, with skills in Spanish, Portuguese, English, and Mandarin, I am well-positioned for opportunities in various industries, especially those looking to invest in Latin America.
Important Achievements
Academically, I’ve consistently ranked among the top of my class. Extracurricularly, I’ve shared my Paraguayan culture through dance performances, including at the Presidential Office Building for the 60th anniversary of Paraguay-Taiwan relations. My greatest achievement, though, is the family and lasting friendships I’ve built in Taiwan.
Advice for Prospective Students
I recommend Taiwan to anyone seeking a safe country with delicious food and an enriching cultural experience. Keeping an open mind and immersing oneself in the local culture can provide new perspectives and foster empathy with people worldwide.
