Indonesia
Getting the chance to meet and connect with people from so many different backgrounds has really shaped who I am and expanded the way I see the world.
Taiwan first popped into my head as a beautiful and peaceful place. When COVID-19 was spreading, Taiwan seemed well-prepared to resolve problems. They welcomed international students with certain regulations, while other countries remained closed. Taiwan offers international students many benefits, such as discounted prices for swab tests and cheaper dormitory quarantine options compared to hotels.
Academic Experience
I’m currently in my first semester of the international business and trade program. This semester, I’m taking 15 credits, including psychology, calculus, English, Chinese, and physical education (PE). I’ve enjoyed all my subjects, though calculus can be overwhelming at times. However, my psychology professor is kind and patient, making it my favorite subject. It’s fascinating to learn about human behavior and thinking. The PE classes have been an exciting experience, offering a variety of sports like basketball, tennis, volleyball, and ping pong, which weren’t as diverse back in my home country.
Comparing Educational Systems
Taiwan’s educational system is more flexible and modern compared to my home country. For example, every major in Taiwan requires PE, which is uncommon back home. The university environment allows for personal expression in fashion and hair color, reflecting Taiwan’s open-mindedness. The facilities, including sports courts, a three-floor cafeteria, and a library with three floors, are impressive. The dormitories are well-regulated, and my university offers various clubs, catering to diverse interests.
Application Process
Applying to study in Taiwan was straightforward, taking less than a month. The biggest challenge was waiting for the government’s updates during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patiently awaiting uncertain news was difficult, but the regular updates from the government were helpful. Fortunately, there were no issues with my documents, making the process smoother.
Future Plans and Career Benefits
I have fallen in love with Taiwan and would like to stay here after my studies. The variety of food, safety, and unique places in each city make it appealing. I plan to work in Taiwan to improve my Mandarin language skills and gain experience. My passion for social media presents opportunities here. However, if my family needs me, I would prioritize them and use my knowledge from Taiwan to grow elsewhere.
Personal Growth and Achievements
Studying in Taiwan has benefitted me mentally, academically, and experientially. Having the opportunity to interact with people from diverse backgrounds has strengthened my personality and broadened my worldview. I’ve learned Mandarin and other languages incidentally. Working part-time has helped me appreciate every job. My language skills in Mandarin, English, and my mother tongue will be advantageous in my future career. A significant achievement was moving into the dormitory after quarantine, which was a new experience for me, as I had been accustomed to having things prepared by my family and maids in my home country.
