Paraguay
I aim to leverage the education and experience I’ve acquired in Taiwan to modernize Paraguay’s education system and foster deeper academic and cultural partnerships between the two countries.
I’m a 34-year-old Paraguayan PhD student studying Digital Learning and Education at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. I lived in Yilan for a year to study Mandarin and then relocated to Taipei for university. Back in Paraguay, I worked as an English teacher. In my free time, I enjoy reading, listening to rock music, cooking, and hiking, with the latter being my favorite activity in Taiwan due to its stunning landscapes.
My interest in Taiwan began during a class on Asia-Latin America Relations. I was initially drawn to Taiwan’s beautiful orchids and its diplomatic relations with Paraguay. As I learned more about Taiwan’s traditions, food, language, politics, and lifestyle, my admiration for the country grew, particularly its commitment to democracy. Taiwan’s open and democratic society was a major factor in my decision to study here.
Academic Program and Enjoyment
I’m currently studying education and technology. My favorite subjects include motivation and learning, where I explore students’ perspectives on education, and advanced technologies in education, focusing on creating virtual reality environments. Understanding students’ motivations and challenges helps me envision how I can contribute to improving the educational system in Paraguay.
Educational Comparison: Taiwan vs. Paraguay
In Taiwan, all my professors speak English, which is a significant difference from Paraguay. They also have numerous research publications, demonstrating their expertise. The quality of public educational institutions in Taiwan, including cleanliness, classroom quality, and laboratory facilities, is much higher than what I’ve seen in public universities in Paraguay. The Polytechnic Taiwan-Paraguay University aims to bring the best of both countries together in the field of education.
Challenges of Studying in Taiwan
The biggest challenges I faced were leaving my family behind, especially during the pandemic, and organizing the necessary documents within a short time frame. However, the Taiwan Embassy in Paraguay was incredibly supportive and helpful throughout the application process.
Future Plans and Goals
Although I love Taiwan and consider it the best country to live in, my plan is to return to Paraguay. My goal is to apply the knowledge I’ve gained in Taiwan to improve the Paraguayan educational system and strengthen educational cooperation between Taiwan and Paraguay. I aim to work at the Ministry of Education in Paraguay and contribute to public policy implementation to elevate the educational standards to an international level.
Achievements in Taiwan
One of my most important achievements in Taiwan is learning to speak Mandarin. This experience was not only about language acquisition but also about immersing myself in Taiwanese culture and connecting with its people. Learning Mandarin in various settings has been a deeply enriching experience.
Advice for Prospective Students
To those considering studying in Taiwan, my advice is: do not be afraid. Embrace the challenges (which may include chasing after the garbage truck), learn the language, adapt to the new environment, and enjoy the unique blend of tradition and modernity. Taiwan, with its warm people, beautiful landscapes, and rich culture, is a reason in itself to come and study.
