I encourage future students in Taiwan to take on part-time jobs while studying, since it gives them valuable academic support and real-world work experience at the same time.

Studying in Taiwan: A Multicultural Journey

Originally from Bangkok, Thailand, I am currently a graduate student in the MBA program at National Taipei University of Technology. Having lived in Taipei, Taiwan for seven months, I am thoroughly enjoying my life here. On weekends, I often go hiking with friends, finding it a relaxing activity. Taiwan has particularly impressed me in several aspects, especially its transportation system, which is very convenient. Interestingly, my most frequently used mode of transportation in Taiwan is the YouBike, which I find easy to use and environmentally friendly.

Before embarking on my master’s journey in Taiwan, I earned a B.A. in Language and Culture. After working in Thailand for two years, I yearned to expand my business knowledge and improve my Mandarin language skills. I firmly believe that expertise in both business and Mandarin will benefit my future career. These motivations guided my decision to pursue higher education in Taiwan. Additionally, Taiwan’s similarity to Thailand in living expenses and culture made me confident that adapting to Taiwanese culture would be seamless.

Deciding to study in Taiwan just months before the application deadline posed a significant challenge due to time constraints. Although I initially aimed for the Spring semester to allow more preparation time, I had to adjust to the Fall intake of most universities. Furthermore, some universities offered limited program information, necessitating direct communication. Despite a less-than-ideal preparation, I was fortunate to be accepted into my current program with a scholarship. This experience taught me the importance of thorough preparation in such critical processes.

The Taipei Tech Experience

I am currently enrolled in the International MBA program at Taipei Tech (NTUT, or Taipei Tech). As the program’s name suggests, our cohort is comprised of international students, fostering a diverse learning environment. The curriculum focuses on business-related subjects such as management accounting, financial management, and marketing research, all of which are instrumental for my future business career. Now in my second semester, I value the time spent with lecturers and classmates, as it offers opportunities for discussion and cultural exchange, enriching my understanding of diverse cultures.

Studying in Taiwan differs significantly from my experience in Thailand, particularly in lecture methodology. In Taiwan, students are encouraged to participate more actively, contrasting with the larger, more lecture-focused classes in Thailand. Additionally, the international student body in Taiwan provides a diverse environment, unlike my previous experience with predominantly local classmates in Thailand. Personally, I prefer the challenging and inclusive academic atmosphere in Taiwan, which promotes analytical discussion and diversity.

Future Aspirations in Taiwan

Studying in Taiwan offers a blend of local and international exposure, along with language acquisition. My passion for learning Mandarin is driven by my business aspirations in markets where Mandarin is the primary communication language. Technical and language skills are increasingly vital in today’s job market, and my education in Taiwan is equipping me with both, enhancing my future career prospects.

After completing my master’s degree, I intend to work in Taiwan. I am currently gaining experience as an e-commerce and digital marketing intern at a Taiwanese company in Taipei. This opportunity, aligned with my academic pursuits, is preparing me for my future career. Working in a Taiwanese organization allows me to immerse myself in the local working culture, an invaluable experience. If opportunities arise, I plan to work in Taiwan for a few years post-graduation. I encourage prospective students in Taiwan to seek part-time employment alongside their studies, as it provides both academic and practical work experience.

Celebrating Achievements

My most significant achievements to date were during my first semester in Taiwan. Securing a part-time job relevant to my field of study allowed me to apply classroom knowledge practically at work. Additionally, my academic performance exceeded my expectations, crucial for maintaining my scholarship eligibility. Balancing work and study was challenging, but the satisfactory results were incredibly rewarding.

Insights for Future Students

Having lived here for seven months, I relish every day in Taiwan (except during exam periods). From day one, the locals have been incredibly welcoming and helpful, whether on the streets or on campus. The convenient transportation system makes travel easy, and there are countless activities, like hiking or exploring diverse culinary options, including delicious vegan food. Choosing to study in Taiwan is a decision you won’t regret!
