Vietnam
The MOE Taiwan Scholarship, providing full funding and monthly allowances, has been instrumental in allowing me to focus on my studies without financial concerns.
Since August 2018, I have been in Taiwan as a graduate student in the Acupuncture Department of the International Master’s Program, supported by the Taiwan Scholarship. My undergraduate studies at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City involved leading a neuro-acupuncture project focusing on auricular acupuncture. Now, I am expanding my research in this field. Besides academics, I intern at China Medical University’s Hospital, engage in extracurricular activities, and dedicate my free time to volunteering with friends.
The cultural and educational cooperation between Taiwan and Vietnam has flourished recently. Taiwan’s culture and climate resonate with Vietnam, making it an ideal study destination for me. Taiwan’s universities are known for their state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced facilities, and well-equipped libraries. When I first arrived at China Medical University, I was impressed by its progressive environment and research techniques. The MOE Taiwan Scholarship, providing full funding and monthly allowances, has been instrumental in allowing me to focus on my studies without financial concerns.
The application process for the university was straightforward, following step-by-step instructions. However, applying for the MOE Taiwan Scholarship, which offers a full scholarship with monthly allowances, was more challenging. Balancing university applications with scholarship paperwork was initially confusing, and I even submitted the wrong application form. Thankfully, the scholarship staff responded promptly to my emails, helping me correct and complete my application amidst their busy schedules.
Novel Experiments and Academic Experience
I am pursuing a master’s program in acupuncture, delving into neuroscience and immunology. The laboratory at my university is equipped with advanced bioscience machinery and state-of-the-art systems for cutting-edge disease research. My professors and lab assistants introduced me to novel experiments, enhancing my learning experience. Collaborating with students from diverse backgrounds in this professional setting has been enlightening, allowing me to not only expand my scientific knowledge but also to appreciate cultural diversity.
China Medical University offers an excellent academic environment, with access to modern laboratories, cutting-edge facilities, and extensive library resources. This access to high-quality journals and databases is a significant advantage over the resources available in Vietnam. I am learning to integrate modern techniques into traditional medicine research and treatment. The university also provides easy access to the latest editions of books online, saving time and enhancing convenience. Animal studies, more common in Taiwanese universities, offer practical experience that is less prevalent in Vietnam, further enriching my academic journey.
Benefits of Studying in Taiwan and My Future Plans
Having studied in Taiwan for over six months, I’ve realized that the programs and professors here have enriched my medical knowledge and helped me develop clinical and social skills. Initiating my research project taught me valuable lessons in research planning, time management, self-sufficiency, and adaptability. I’ve also had the chance to enhance my oral presentation skills and proficiency in both Mandarin and English, boosting my confidence and cross-cultural communication abilities. The international student community has expanded my network, opening doors for future collaborations.
After completing my master’s at China Medical University, I aim to share my knowledge and experience with future generations in Vietnam and continue my research in acupuncture. I also aspire to work on international cooperation teams in hospitals or medical universities in Vietnam, fostering collaboration between Taiwan and Vietnam in education and medical aid. My goal is to organize conferences on medical research, particularly in traditional Chinese medicine, and invite esteemed Taiwanese professors to participate, thereby advancing our medical systems.
Advice for Future Students in Taiwan
As Geoffrey Willans said, “You can never understand one language until you understand at least two.” In Taiwan, you’ll have the opportunity to learn and practice both English and Mandarin. Embrace the different environment, food, and lifestyle in Taiwan, as they reflect the nation’s culture. Taiwan is safe, even at night, so I recommend exploring the local night markets.
Before coming here, I had never hiked, but in Taiwan, hiking is a popular activity for all ages. The country’s mountains and trails are not only safe but also breathtakingly beautiful. I encourage everyone to try hiking at least once during their stay in Taiwan. Studying in Taiwan has been transformative, enhancing my friendships, knowledge, communication skills, and maturity.
