Chang Gung University offers exactly the academic environment I need to progress toward my future career as a researcher.

CGU: Perfect for Virology Studies

One of the main reasons I chose to study at Chang Gung University (CGU) is the strong alignment between my professional background and my long-term career goals in infectious disease research and vaccine development. For the past years, I have worked at a One Health Center in my country, where I gained substantial exposure to the One Health framework and its application in preventing zoonotic and emerging infectious diseases. Through this experience, I realized the essential role of molecular research, vaccines, and antiviral strategies in strengthening public health systems. This professional journey motivated me to pursue a graduate program that provides advanced training in virology, immunology, and molecular medicine.

Chang Gung University offers exactly the academic environment I need to progress toward my future career as a researcher. This aligns well with my aspiration to contribute to scientific preparedness for future outbreaks, as Indonesia is considered a potential hotspot for emerging infectious diseases due to its high biodiversity and zoonotic risk factors. By studying at CGU, I believe I will gain the technical skills, research experience, and international network necessary to advance my future career and contribute meaningfully to global and national health security.

One of the aspects that interests me most is the opportunity to conduct research under CGU’s Research Center for Emerging Viral Infections (RCEVI). The center’s track record in virus identification and its contributions to COVID-19 source-tracking demonstrate its capability as a leading research hub. I am now working under experienced scientists whose expertise aligns with my intended thesis topic on molecular biology, especially Internal Ribosome Entry Sites (IRES), and their application potency for future biotechnology development. This research matches my goal of developing antiviral drugs and vaccines.

Diverse Learning and Skill Enhancement

The program also provides an international learning environment with classmates from diverse countries, which enriches academic discussions and broadens perspectives on global health. Courses such as Vaccine Development, Molecular & Cellular Biology, and Animal Models for Emerging Infectious Disease, offer practical and relevant training for laboratory-based research.

Additionally, the program’s bilingual approach, research collaborations, and opportunities to participate in mini-symposiums and academic forums make it an excellent platform to enhance scientific communication skills. These elements collectively influenced my decision and strengthened my confidence that this program can support my academic growth and future career in infectious disease research.

Financial Support and Academic Focus

Another factor influencing my decision is the availability of scholarships from the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Chang Gung University. As someone from a low-income family, financial support is essential for continuing my graduate studies abroad. The possibility of receiving full or partial funding greatly reduces the burden of tuition fees and living costs, allowing me to focus on academic and research development.

Advice for Success in Taiwan

For international students considering studying in Taiwan, my first advice is to be open to embracing the academic environment, which is known for its high discipline, strong research culture, and supportive faculty. Taiwanese universities provide excellent opportunities for hands-on laboratory experience, collaborative research, and access to advanced facilities, but students should be prepared to manage their time well and maintain consistent academic performance.

Second, in relation to the first point, this must also align with your health. Do not let the learning process exhaust you physically or mentally. Maintain good communication with your academic advisor. Consult a professional if you ever need psychological counseling. Share your feelings with a trusted friend so you don’t have to carry the burden alone.

Third, I encourage future students to learn basic Mandarin before arriving. While many programs offer English-based courses, daily life, such as using public transportation, shopping, or interacting with local communities, becomes much easier with basic language skills. Continuing Mandarin learning during the study period can also help build deeper connections with peers, professors, and local residents.

Lastly, be open-minded and enjoy the cultural richness Taiwan offers. The country is safe, welcoming, and full of unique traditions, food, and natural landscapes. Balancing academic responsibilities with exploring the culture will make the experience meaningful and memorable. With the right preparation and mindset, studying in Taiwan can be an academically rewarding and personally transformative journey.
